Maybe worth talking to your GP about it. Although I no from my experience they haven't been much use when it comes to IBS but it's worth a try when your in pain.

If it was caused by infection, why not a poop sample?

I had a similar issue a few weeks back. I cut out all wheat (bread, pasta etc) and within a few days I was back to normal. I have a feeling if it had been something more serious the problem wouldn't have cleared up. Might be worth a shot. I've also read before that a bad dose of D&V can leave you temporarily lactose intolerant, so it might also be worth cutting out milk and milk products.

This is what happened to me. I had a really bad stomach virus type thing, luckily it only lasted a few days, but afterwards I couldn't tolerate milk.

I used lactose free milk for a couple of months then went back on normal and stomach (and bowels!) were fine again.

It was suggested to me that I had IBS following intermittent pain and diarrhoea. Finally, long story, I felt very ill and struggling to breathe after feeling nauseous in the presence of wall flowers. My GP, who had an interest in botany, leapt out of his chair shouting brassicas-wallflowers are brassicas. I cut them our of my body and been fine since. Might be worth keeping a food and chemicals diary to see if a pattern emerges.

Problem is IBS is only a symptom, so you still need to find out what is causing it.

My son had problems when he was about ten years old. He was referred to a really lovely specialist who did a myriad of tests. He was loathe to go past a certain point though as my son was so young and the tests painful, so he said he would give a diagnosis of IBS, which (his words) was what was diagnosed when they couldn't find what was causing it.

What kind of test do they do that would hurt??

He didnt expand and I didnt ask, but I think what might be painful/upsetting for a child would be merely uncomfortable for an adult.

If it were me I would look to my diet first.

My IBS (many years ago) was a physical manifestation of a nervous complaint (too much stress). Plenty of stressors around.

You sound as if you're going through a right royal rough patch, medically speaking: sympathies. I hope these various threads have given you some ideas about what you want to do next in pursuit of better health.

It sounds very much as if you need to see the doc again. We're used to doctors railroading us on here, so our usual advice is: write down your main symptoms, what you want to say to the doctor and what outcome you want from the appointment before you go and, if humanly possible, take someone with you. They don't tend to be so dismissive if there's a third party present.
