Hi new here and wondered if anyone has had a similar experience, I am on 50mg of thyroxine which I tolerate, but have been told I need more

Welcome to the forum, Jazzz.

It helps members advise/comment if you post your recent thyroid bloods results with the lab ref ranges (the figures in brackets after your result).

50mcg is a low dose and rarely decreases the TSH or symptoms sufficiently in newly diagnosed hypothyroid patients. Levothyroxine is a powerful hormone so dosing is usually increased in 25mcg increments to avoid over medication. You should have another thyroid blood test in 6 weeks in case a further increase is needed. Don't take your thyroxine on the morning of your blood test, it can be taken afterwards.

Take Levothyroxine on an empty stomach with a large glass of water one hour before food/drink or two hours after food/drink. Take it two hours away from other medication and supplements and 4 hours away from calcium, iron and oestrogen. Levothyroxine can be taken in the morning or at night if that suits you better.

Hi and thank you for the reply.

My latest results were tsh =1.7 ft4 =12.9 ft3 =3.5 I have been on 50mg for 12 months now and feel a little better than I did in respect of energy levels and some other symptoms, but have always suffered from headaches and sinus pain since I started taking thyroxine, the more I take the worse it seems to get, I feel my doctor does not believe me for some reason. So I keep trying to take more and feeling very bad for doing so, and end up taking 50 mg again, which I realise is not enough. I just get told I need to take more, I wish I could.

Jazzz, looking at your results you do appear to be undermedicated. It is very unlikely that you are allergic to thyroxine which is a natural hormone but you may have an intolerance to one or more of the fillers. Take an antihistamine an hour before taking your Levothyroxine and see whether it prevents you having headaches and sinus pain. If it does, ask your pharmacist to supply Actavis or Mercury Pharma, whichever you are not currently taking and see whether you can tolerate the increase. Wockhardt 25mcg has fewer fillers than either of the above.

Hi I had the same problem , ended up on nasal sprays :( but did not make any difference I tried upping levo by just 25 mg once a week for a few weeks then another 25 same week and so on and boy did it make a difference suddenly felt more energy and could smell and taste again but then I went slightly over as its such a fine balance? keep trying and persevere with doctor . I felt too bad to complain! but its our life our health so eventually I phoned for advise and asked for blood tests and wanted answers . Its a long difficult road but keep going :) Just wanted to say Wockhardt worked best for me 25mg
