Is there a difference between the different makes of NDT.

Just wondering if there's a difference between the various brands of NDT and if it's OK to swap between them ie Armour to Nature Throid etc.

The reason being big variations in price....Armour being about the most costly.

They should be similar in using thyroid powder if they are derived from pig thyroid. The fillers may differ. Here is Armour's formulation from Dr. Mercola's article:

Thanks Heloise. I've noticed that Armour seems to be the most expensive and if I have to keep on importing my own then may try a cheaper brand. Nature Throid is about 1/3 cheaper for instance. Just wanted to make sure I can swap from one to the other without the problems experienced when changing from one Levo to another. I'm still trying to recover from the change from Eltroxin to Mercury Pharma levo which has made me so unwell and caused all sorts of problems I never had before.

Hi Flatfred, What sort of problems did you have with the change from Eltroxin to Mercury Pharma Levo? My son and I are still having skin problems since being changed in 2010. Each time I wash my hair I can taste the shampoo in my mouth and sticky covered spots appear in scalp, arms, legs, face. A change from MP to Wockhardt in February this year has not changed much, although burning in legs and scalp has eased. Aches and pains still bad and no change in skin problems. Please let me know how it is affecting you. Janet.

Hi j_bee, The probs I had with MP levo are much more recent and very severe, not to belittle what you're feeling. I, and others are convinced there is/was something very wrong with it....more like e a poison...seriously, very toxic. If you do a search on here you'll find quite a lot regarding MP levo. I stopped taking it in Feb/March and am not back to how I was before taking it. I certainly feel better now than I did a couple of months ago so I think if you give it a bit more time you'll hopefully improve further.

Like you I felt it was a poison, but sad to say since changing to Wockhardt in February I and my son are no better. Are you now on NDT? Feel this is the way I will have to go. Janet.

Sorry for late reply....been away since Thurs. Yes, I'm now on Armour NDT and slowly starting to improve as I gradually increase the dose. It took a bit of adjustment for the first 2 weeks but nothing compared to the MP levo...or any of the other brands....I can't tolerate any of them. Also, I had a total thyroidectomy when 18 and with NDT my body's getting T 1,2,and 3 for the first time in many years so I'm expecting it to take a little while to settle down.

I'm having to pay for the NDT at the mo but my GP has said he will see about prescribing if I get on OK with it. If I have to carry on paying then there are cheaper brands and I'm advised that there's no difference between them so I'll go for the cheaper option.

All the best to you and your son.

Flatfred,

NatureThroid and Westhroid are usually recommended to people who need hypo-allergenic NDT so should be safe to switch to. This link lists the ingredients in most brands of NDT stopthethyroidmadness.com/a...

Hi Clutter.

Thanks for the link. Looks like I'll try a cheaper make when next ordering as there is quite a difference between the various brands.

Actual ingredients, claimed T4 and T3 content and other information for the main prescription desiccated thyroid products are all here:

Although we keep hearing about people who do well on one but not another, or changes to the products, etc., many people have switched among them without much difficulty.

Thanks Rod. I can't imagine I'll have as many problems as I had swapping from Eltroxin to every other levo on the market! This site is a godsend !

Thanks again.
