How did you build up your NDT, and how did you know it was your optimal dose?

Even though I'm fairly sure I know how to start, I'm still fretting over doing something wrong.

My plan is to start on 1/2 grain (30mg) (have ordered Thyroid-S by the way), and increase by 1/2 every fortnight. Once at 3 grains, I understand it's wise to hold this dose for 4-6 weeks to allow the build up of T4? Then either stick at that, or increase again by half until I find the optimal dosage?

I'm just wondering, how did you know when you had reached the correct dose for you?

Also, would it hurt to start at 1/4 of a dose, and increase by a quarter instead? Or is there no point?

I've also seen a lot of people split doses - is this a good idea, or just take it in one go? Personal preference?

I'm using Dr Peatfields protocol, and also referring to the STTM book. Both have been invaluable :)

  • You might not need 3, I am happy on 1 1/2. I started on 1/4 AM & PM for a week, then 1/2 AM & PM for 10 days, then 3/4 AM & 1/2 PM for another week, then 1 AM & 1/2 PM for 3 weeks. I did go up to 1 3/4 for a couple of weeks but started to feel like I had drunk to much coffee, so went back to 1 1/2 about 3 weeks ago. I now take it all at once in the morning, rather than split. I definitely felt a difference very quickly even when on the very tiny dose, it was miraculous!

  • Thank you for that - that's really useful to know. I guess I'll just have to take it slow, and see how I feel on it? I'm eager to start, but nervous at the same time! :-/

  • Are you changing from T4 only?

    Also how are your labs ?
