HELP!!! I can't get past 1st base..........

I had my blood test results, which I have previously posted on here which as you can imagine came back 'normal' when I asked here if they are so normal why have a feel constantly tired, cold & put stone on in 12 months she couldn't answer, just mumbled stupid answers. So I suggested I would be going private to investigate it further & I would need a referral letter as now my symptoms are really affecting my business. She said it would be ready in a few days. i spoke to her secretary on Thursday, basically just to check that it had been done & was winging it's way 'via fax' (so 21st century!) to the Spire hospital in Hull.

She informed me that she hadn't received any notification to write a letter she would chase it up.

Bear with me here comes the interesting bit...........on Friday the next day a letter arrived at home stating & I quote'' with regards to your query about a private referral Dr******* had informed me that this was not agreed upon due to the results being normal & as such no referral has been done'!!

It's almost a if they are playing God, surely where I spend my hard earned money is my choice not there's??

Or is it more of the case that they know there 'normal' diagnosis will be proved wrong??

What do I do now as I have a private appointment booked on June 2nd (7 days time)???

Contact the practice manager or GP and say that you booked an appointment after the GP agreed a referral letter and ask why it has been refused because despite normal blood results you have unresolved clinical symptoms which you want investigated.

What a plonker!

:-D :-D Lol!

Hello TF! I am a bit confused.... Why would you even need a referral letter if you choose to go private.I have done just that for several consults on different things and have never been referred by GP.It never entered my head to do that, just phoned and made an appointment with the private doc independently.

Quite agree, your money to spend as you choose!

Ps when anything found to be wrong at private consult, have gone back to NHS gp,given details and have been treated.

Hope you get the help you need

Many private consultants require a GP referral.

Please make sure, if possible, that the person you are going to consult is 'sympathetic' to thyroid gland clinical symptoms. If not, you may just waste your money.

If you haven't been recommended to your consultant, email louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org as she has a list.

As a last resort, you could make a private GP appointment and get a referral that way.

Some of the doctors on TUK private docs list don't require a referral. Maybe you could see one of them? I can't see any reasonable reason for your GP to refuse your request. Blood tests are only part of the picture, you are having symptoms. Have they no compassion! I hope you find the help you need.

Hi totally-fed-up. I had the same problem as you 16yr ago. Went to my GP as I had all the symptoms of an under active thyroid. He sent off some blood tests, and asked to see me a week later, he told me my blood test had come back normal. I went private to see a specialist in Birmingham who deals only in the thyroid. He told me 9 times out of 10 a blood test comes back saying normal, this is because the thyroid levels are border line, so the GPs class this as a normal reading. He said I did need to be on Levothyroxine, and gave me a letter to take to my GP, who after reading it put me on 125 micro grams. Go back to your GP and insist you want to be referred.
