Has anyone heard anything about a link between ... - Thyroid UK
Has anyone heard anything about a link between autoimmune disorders and having children on the autistic spectrum?
...I think I have read that low thyroid hormones can cause abnormalities with brain development. Hence it is important to be monitored closely before and during the pregnancy - and of course afterwards.... Maybe have a look at Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride's website - she has good experience as she had an autistic son. There is also videos of her on You Tube....
Yes, Asperger's is autism. The diagnosis was created around the same time as the diagnosis of autism hence the two different terms. It is basically just one presentation of autism where the person is high functioning. In the UK at least, the diagnosis of Asperger's is being phased out and a diagnosis of ASD is being used for all forms of autism. You probably already know all this if you have someone in the family with it
I read an article yesterday about autism being 4 times more likely in children born to mothers with compromised thyroid. I'll see if I can find it.
My son has ASD or Asperger's, whatever you want to call it.

This is interesting on the ASD/Asperger's issue, may be nothing we will see livescience.com/38630-autis...
Oh dear. Just add they amalgamate the diagnoses, they find biological distinctions between them!
Very interesting article. Thanks for posting
Thanks for that one Helenback, different children need different teachings.
Grandchild was half diagnosed with Asperger's by specialist who told Mum to get two books on Asperger's, the next specialist is thinking different as she has never come across a child like this before, there has been a long wait with no answer, we heard news of specialists bundling all the conditions together, (to save money maybe ?) but that is no help to our Grandchild as we know our child has PDA, which is different again to Asperger's and needs different teachings.
(PDA children are normally diagnosed firstly by parents before specialists work it out.)
PDA can be diagnosed in both counties either side of where child lives, but not in the child's county.
PDA website itself states that you cannot teach a PDA child the same as Asperger's.
This is all frightening news, but so pleased someone has realized there is a difference and are using 'brain' science to prove it.
I read this just yesterday

My son has Asperger's.

think it was posted on "Thyroid Sexy" (Gena Lee Nolin of Baywatch fame)
That's where I saw the article! It was you posting it! Clearly my memory hasn't got any better yet, lol!
and I got it via a kind person on facebook 'Thyroid friends'!
seen the connection before, years ago - again can't remember where! (could have been connected with Vit D too I think)
If only doctors, midwives, SENCos, EdPsychs etc. realised this.....
Our SENco knows now. I told her yesterday
My son also has Asperger's and SPD and OCD and Tourette's poor kid
Oh my goodness! His anxiety level must be through the roof!
Sensory issues are a real pain for them. Affects the foods they will eat, the clothes they'll wear, the way the sit and do just about everything. I have 3 children with ASD in my class, all with sensory issues. It's exhausting to watch them sitting! We try to keep sitting still to a minimum. They don't fidget and spin and rock and poke each other so much then.
...that is so sad - and yes of course you are right. All the more reason why we should have tests from day one so everyone has their own baseline to work from....
Very interesting, thank you, any one know if pregnant Mothers are routinely tested for thyroid disorders?
I don't think so but I could be wrong. It certainly wasn't routine when I was pregnant. I think it should be...
Yes same with me, I am sure now I had thyroid problems when pregnant but it wasn't picked up till my son was about 6 and I was complaining of falling asleep sitting at the dinner table, and most other places!
for what its worth...Im hypothyroid and now have mild lupus (it came much later the lupus)...My daughter was
always in the gifted learning class at school...kindie thru to graduation. I thought she was hyper active at one time, but it was cause she was bored...(she was tested).
That's good to know. I'm lucky that my son is high functioning but not all are. He is also gifted but not at all hyper luckily. My daughter is hyper but doesn't have autism. She's just naturally a hand full, lol
I do think it is important to remember the positives so thank you for that
Hi This is interesting as both have hereditary tendencies. I was very Hypo when I had my daughter and son, years ago. They seemed OK but now so much more diagnosed. My husband ,son in law and grand daughter have "Asperger`s"Although only recent years has this been known to exist. Now, although it is sometimes diagnosed to easily.
Best wishes,
Jackie
Thyroid issues are not routinely tested for in pregnancy unless you have a family history and not always then. My daughter was monitored during her third pregnancy because I had been diagnosed with hypo 2 years before and there is a very strong family history. Interesting to read about endometriosis. My eldest daughter had terrible problems with that and had major surgery including hysterectomy when she was 30! It would maybe be a good topic for a research paper-Thyroid issues and endometriosis! Anyone with endo should be tested for thyroid issues!
Wonder if we can find someone who might be interested!
Please read Dr Natasha Campbell McBrides book Gut and Psychology, she is an expert on gut health and the autistic spectrum. Gut health has a huge impact on the immune system. You can purchase this book on Amazon, there is also a cd on the GAP diet which she recommends to heal the gut. Both are excellent references and the knowledge you will gain is phenomenal.
Like I need anything else to feel guilty about!!lol
My boy's Autistic and I have Hashi's.
