and, how do you control the dosage?

Using NDT - How many of you are taking this without your GP's knowledge?
I dont and kind of never have. I did take NDT on my own, without my GP's consent for over 2 years, but I did tell them I was taking it right from the start. I never asked for monitoring and it was never offered. By the time I resorted to this I had no faith left in doctors. I wrote them a letter and told them I intended self treating with it. I dont agree with doing things behind peoples backs and the GP technically still had a responsibility to me (that they chose to ignore), but thats my personal opinion. each to thier own. They could have removed me from the practice, but didnt, and didnt respond to the letter either. Not that I cared about the lack of response, I was done with them anyway.
As far a controlling the dosage went, I did it purely on a trial and error based on how I felt. Its a bit frightning at first, especially when there is no one to ask and no one to share the responsibility, but it worked out for the best in the end. I would have had the odd private blood test just for peace of mind if I could have afforded it though..
I am following Dr Peatfield's protocol in his book and on the TPA website. As I understand it, you will know when you are at the right level because you will start to feel hyper symptoms if you try to increase any more. Has to be increased very very slowly. The STTM book is also useful about dosing
I will be having tests done privately too, if gp won't do any. I want to know where my results are when I feel totally back to normal, for my own curiousity really, not to use to change my dose!!!
Sorry, but what is the STTM book?

You start slowly and work up gradually until you feel well. If you take a bit too much, just drop the dose down slightly. That's what they did before the blood tests came in and NDT was the only available thyroid gland hormone. Nowadays synthetic levothyroxine is the only one to be prescribed by the GP. Some may prescribe T3 but not often.
Can't you let GP prescribe T4 and do tests, but take NDT.
I was thinking of doing that, if I can ever get them to give me ANY treatment!
You could try this but your blood tests would look odd. When I a mferling well on NDT, my TSH is suppressed at <0.04, my fT4 is below mid-range and my fT3 is top third if the range. Most GPs wouldn't like the suppressed TSH. I am very lucky that mind is prescribing my NDT and is going by my fT levels rather than TSH.
My nhs gp knows and doesnt care . I refuse to tell her the dose or give her copies of my private blood tests- as if she'dknow what to do with them! i use the tests and my symptoms to determine dose.
I bought something called thyroid natural glandular from a place I buy important supplements, it says it had thyroid in it, I take three pills, each one has 40mg thyroid, because my Endo offered me NOTHING, except to keep a watch on my goiter and bloods, even this I felt horrible .... Surprise surprise bloods within normal. But on the very low end of it. So just like everything else I feel you have to do it yourself. I am not sure if these pills will help only been about a week now and I have had a killer cold, felling better now but that is all I know. Self dosing I guess. Good luck honey. X
