Not wanting to sound or be negative, but thyroid might be at the hard end of this scale. We know so well that thyroid affects rates - rather than what processes occur. Whereas the article explains that cancers produce different substances. So in thyroid issues, if it is only the balance of substances that shifts, that means that the dog/artificial nose needs to be able to assess the relative quantities and not what seems to be the more simple task of identifying something that is not normally present.

Nevertheless, I really do think that the whole panoply of testing kit that is appearing will, in time, be shown to have huge value. There is the Qualcomm Tricorder XPrize:

Apple and other phone makers are extremely keen on connecting their devices in all sorts of ways to sensors. This might be able to demonstrate things like core and skin temperature dynamically, some blood measurements, photographically recordable evidence, etc. And maybe some olfactory device will be attachable to your phone and an app to analyse it will be available to download.

It remains to be seen how the endocrinology establishment will respond to these challenges.

Was watching Crufts the other night and there was a little boy who had diabetes and a pet dog that could tell when his blood sugar was dropping. It was absolutely amazing and must have made such a difference to his life. So who knows. :-)

Fascinating! Roll on e-sniffing instead of invasive and painful testing.

It might not work so well if you use a Roll-on ;)

An idea not to be sniffed at. My cat stops short of coming into the toilet when I am there but only on certain days but he follows me everywhere else. Even to the point of jumping into the car. Wonder if he smells something in the air! X
