Hi i have almost every symptom of hyperthyroid from bulging sore eyes, difficulty swallowing food, anxiety, shaking hands, insomnia, facial sweating, and weird stools that wont flush!

Im 36 and male.

I have had an appointment about my eyes and i have an enlarged optic nerve but nothing they want to treat at this point. My doctor hasnt diagnosed anything yet.

My bloods came back like this

Serum total t3 1.3 (range 1.1 to 2.6)

Free t4 10.1 (range 9.0 to 23)

Serum tsh 1.57 (range 0.2 to 4.5)

Reactive protein level 2.0 (range 0.00 to 12.00)

Can anyone offer any advice please. I feel terrible and the doctor isnt helping at all.

Many thanks

David

Hi David

Sorry you have had no replies - it may be that your question was missed.

Hopefully someone will pick it up from latest activity...

Has your GP suggested a referral to an Endo? We have a list here of 'better' NHS ones - drop me an email - louise.warvill@thyroiduk.org

Have you got any previous results? Have they tested you for thyroid antibodies?

For future reference, people tend to get a better response in the Questions section... :)

Hi. I'm sorry your doctor is being unhelpful.

Your blood tests actually suggest that your thyroid is a little on the sluggish side rather than overactive so I wonder if something else is going on too. Sometimes when your thyroid is becoming underactive it has bursts of over compensating which results in transitory high thyroid hormone levels and the symptoms you describe.

There's a possibility of a problem with your adrenals or possibly an issue causing severe hypoglycaemia. The reason I suggest this as a possibility is because my husband suffers with severe reactive hypoglycaemia and his symptoms are very similar to those of hyperthyroidism. In fact this is what he was initially tested for because his dad had Grave's disease. He noticed changes in his eyes, sweating, racing heart, shaking, feeling faint, diarrhoea etc. He keeps it under control by being careful with his diet.

It may not be the cause for you but your doctor should be investigating to find the cause especially as you are having difficulty swallowing. It may be worth getting checked for hypoglycaemia anyway. This will require a glucose tolerance test. It would also be a good idea to get your thyroid checked annually is possible given how low your T4 and t3 are. Always go back to your doctor if your symptoms get any worse.

I hope you get to the bottom of this.

Thanks, i have definitely found that all of these symptoms do come and go quite rapidly. Its the insomnia foggy head and bulging eyes that are really bugging me. I went 60 hours with no sleep a couple of months ago! Then ok for a month then its back.

I get all the thyroid symptoms, scaly skin on my head, racing heart, basically everything except the ones i cant get because im not a woman!

Ah. It could be hashimoto's then. As your thyroid is attacked by antibodies it can over compensate for a while then you can become permanently hypo eventually. Of course Graves could be a possibility but I don't know enough about it. It would be really helpful for your doctor to check your antibodies so you know one way or the other. It must be frustrating and worrying when you don't know what's wrong.
