I have just had the following blood test result ....

Parathyroid Hormone 7.2

Can anyone help me understand what this is and why it is bad ?

It either means you have a parathyroid problem (little pea size glands that site beside your thyroid) or you have VitD deficiency. What is your GP's next step and did he/she test your calcium levels as well.

The parathyroid controls calcium levels in your body and its vitd that makes calcium so if you have low vitd then your parathyroid will keep calling for more (hence the high level). My doctor diagnosed my low vitd because of my high parathyroid levels.

Get your GP to check your vitamin d and calcium levels if you can.

The 4 parathyroid glands are very close to the thyroid and they control calcium levels. Sometimes 1 or more can go out of control due to a benign adenoma, this produces to much calcium with is bad for you, lots of info on parathyroid.com

Your pth is high, have you had calcium, phosphate, albumin and vit D checked ? if your calcium is also high it could indicate hyperparathyroidism but you do need further investigations before that can be diagnosed.

Hi On its no use. Normal is up to 5. However, the blood test for PTH must be Am and with a calcium and a vit D test. If 2 over range and D high for you, then a nuclear scan of PTH and ultra sound of the thyroid. Mine is 15 as I do have a problem. It varies so much in the day and really no good if the 3 tests not done together and must be AM. A lot of docs do not know this but I have A good Endo. Even had a thyroid consultant at another hospital not knowing this too., late at night PTH only and came out "normal"

I forgot to say my Vit D and Calcium were severely low and not high - and all tests done in the morning

Hi This is unlikely to be PTH. Sounds like you need calcium and vit D on a script,However, as all complicated this should be overseen by a good Endo. and repeat tests. if not seeing one, find good one only then ask for a referral corrected calcium must always be in range as an electrolyte, that is paramount to everything normally treatment with D causes calcium to go up but not always especially if below range.It is much more dangerous if calcium is above range, the most dangerous of the 3.. Remember d is hormonal, are you having your TSH, T4 and FT3 checked ? Low D does make the thyroid levels go down.
