Hello, thanks in advance for any replies. I'm a 24 y/o male and have recently noticed I've an enlarged thyroid.

I noticed this fairly recently, on the back of about a month of a bad stomach and, before that, a week of heart palpitations. I have a pretty long history of depression and anxiety without the Dr. really being interested, nor was he regarding the heart palpitations, nor my sexual dysfunction since maturity. I do have a history of thyroid issues on my Mum's side of the family. So, this enlarged thyroid!? It's not painful, I'm in no better or worse a mental state than I had been before (as far as I'm aware) and it's lasted probably a month now. Isn't this pretty odd in a male of my age? A lot of google searches bring up reams about women slightly older than myself but few young, healthy males.

If the reply is "go see the Dr." I probably will anyway but if I'm sat there with a visibly pounding heart and he ships me off I can't see him changing for a second Adam's apple.

I should add that about a year and a half ago I first went regarding depression and my T numbers were apparently fine

Ask for a full thyroid function test:-

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

If your TSH is within range your T3 may not be tested.

Always get a print-out of your blood tests for your own records and so that you can post them on a new question for members to comment. They must also have the ranges as labs differ.

Remind him of your Mum's history and this is a list of clinical symptoms. Also ask for a Vitamin B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate as they can be deficient.

When a doctor says your thyroid blood test results are 'fine' you need to take it with a pinch of salt (or maybe a shovelful) until you get the actual numbers (and the ranges). We do get younger men on this site with the same symptoms that you are describing, including low testosterone and depression, so you are not alone. Taking your health into your own hands is a really good move if you haven't been able to persuade your doctor to help you.

It is very probable you won't thank me! - but here's a few things you can do to help yourself....if you wish....

check low vitamins & minerals - iron, ferritin (storage iron) folate, B12 and Vitamin D (aka sunshine!) - please take them seriously! If you're a veggie you'll REALLY be low in iron & B12 (also VitD if you avoid fish/codliver oil)

Eat well & regularly =feel better.

Yes, please don't get intimidated by all us middle-aged hysterical ladies (excluding Rod, PR, Ian etc) - this condition can happen to anyone! But, it's very hard for us to sit back & merely observe!

However there can be

1). a family history

2). a trigger - glandular fever/virus carcrash/whiplash, stress etc

3). lifestyle - I don't really agree with this one - except maybe/perhaps/on occasion/possibly.... some folk DO tend to stay indoors nowadays and overnight playing Gears of War etc. just a thought as my sons did/do! no offence intended just speaking from experience and I do tend to say things I shouldn't in case it may help in some way! J :D

It's important to get your own results - post them here (with ranges for folk to try and help) getting better is a joint effort between you and your doctor...but ultimately it's you that can make the difference.. keep asking questions
