How long should I be taking omeprazole on Levot... - Thyroid UK
How long should I be taking omeprazole on Levothyroxine before going back to see the doctor for something else??
If you don't feel much better with omeprazole see your doctor and tell him.
If you have hypothyroidism, the symptoms of over-acid are similar to low acid. I was given a generic gaviscon and it was awful. I then read that I was more likely to have low acid rather than high and bought betaine with pepsin and it has worked and my stomach is fine now.

To be honest with you I don't know what I am at the moment as I am now on alternating doses every other day so not sure if I'm hypo or hyper especially as I don't have a thyroid any more. I asked my ENT surgeon about the feeling of so etching stuck in my throat all the time and he said ahhh just sounds like reflux so gave me gaviscon advanced to go with my omeprazole.
It was prescribed to me by the oncologist I see for the cancer and not due to see her again until April.
I am also on Slimming world which doesn't seem to be helping, I know it's only early days but I have only lost 5.5 lb since middle of January. My oncologist has said to stick with it for now but I don't know wheat her to ask my doc or wait for now and see what the oncologist says
If you have no thyroid you are hypothyroid.
Can you clarify? You're surgically hypothyroid but only taking thyroid meds every other day or omeprazole every other day?
Omeprazole long term isn't advised, nor any other PPI, as they destroy the ability of the gut to produce acid which is essential to breaking down food in order to obtain B12 and eventually make it difficult to absorb any nutrients and meds via the gut.
A gentler way to deal with gut acid is to take apple cider vinegar in fruit juice before meals. ostlerscidermill.co.uk/
I'm on 2 different doses of Levo 150mcg and 175mcg. I have alternate the dose every day. I take omeprazole every day.
Thanks. Haven't slept and brain isn't being too bright.
Just want to add that 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of bicarbonate of soda in the ACV and fruit juice can help with indigestion, if you do think of reducing omeprazole.
Please take a break J x

Treorchy,
Don't come off Omeprazole all at once. Reduce dosage and taper off. It can be difficult but with ACV may be a little easier. Good luck.
That's the advice that was advocated on the programme I heard. I think it was Inside Health three or four weeks ago.
