If I were you I would ask GP to test free T3 which if low, will show you are not converting T4 to T3. He may then agree to give you T3 or refer you to an endo, who will. Sounds easy but you may need to go privately first. I did this, got the first private prescription and now my GP prescribes on the NHS.
Might also be useful to ask GP to test your Iron, B12, folate, ferritin and Vit D. If these are not high in range your body will not be able to convert. There is also the possible problem of reverse T3 but maybe get the blood test and then post results with reference ranges for comments here. Hope you get help soon.
If your doctor refuses you could use blue horizon topay for your own t3 , i dont have lots of money but i got two sets of tsh,t3 and t4 tests for $90 i keep them till i need my levels testing .
sezzy - thanks, yes I have just googled where to get my own T3 testing kit. The problem is - what do I do with the results ? I assume I take them to the GP and see what they say - although I know A GP that willingly prescribes T3 meds is a truly rare being !
