Has anyone had any experience with homeopathic thyroxine? I'm trying to look at all of the alternatives before succumbing to thyroxine.

What do you mean by homeopathic thyroxine? Do you mean homeopathic treatments to try to make your thyroid work better?

You could try to optimise your iron levels, as well as folate and ferritin, and also check your B12 and vitamin D levels, these are all important for the functioning of the thyroid system, and may well help. On Thyroid UK there is some information about the importance of vitamins for thyroid health:

also a link to nutritional treatments:

'Succumbing' sounds as if you think Thyroxine is some sort of a drug. Levothyroxine is just a synthetic form of the hormone which our thyroid gland produces naturally, although I do acknowledge that it does not suit everyone, me for example.

Sometimes no matter what is done, the fact is that if a person has the autoimmune form of Hypothyroidism, Hashimotos, then the actual gland is being destroyed by antibodies and then nothing seems to work, although some have achieved some reduction in antibodies by going gluten free which has prevented further damage. It might be worth your finding out if you have high levels of antibodies.

Mary Shomon talks about 'natural treatments' here:

I do hope something helps. I don't blame you at all for trying to avoid Levothyroxine.

Hi Marie,

Thank you for your response I will have a look at those links that you have provided.

I found out I had Hashimoto's last August and since then I have been gluten free. I have regular appointments with a naturopath who has prescribed all of those vital nutrients that you suggested, however I'm still not feeling better.

Going gluten free has helped with gastrointestinal problems, but I still ache a lot.

I would like to exhaust all alternatives as I don't like to take anything synthetic, however I know I may have to one day or risk becoming really ill, which I don't want.

I was offered homeopathic thyroxine yesterday and don't know much about it. I'm finding out more on Monday.

Speak to you soon x

Never heard of it and dont believe there is such a thing to be honest homeopathic usually indicates it comes from plant and plants dont make t4 or t3. If you dont like to use synthetics go for natural dessicated thyroid its an animal product

Hi Rhiannon, i also suffer from Hashimoto disease. after I was diagnosed i started to take 50m of Levothyroxine every day and its been like that for 7 years. the dose is stable but i just dont like it is synthetic and ive benn on it for such a long time...so I started to look for other options last year. i have an experience with homeopatic thyroxine and it is not a positive one. the lady I was seeing told me i should stop using Levothyroxine and gave me the substitute. after a 5 days or a week things got bad and in the following week even worse. i felt lake 7 years ago before i was diagnosed. had cramps, nausea most of the day, pain in legs and arms, difficulties with digestions, lost apetite, and felt absolutely miserable and fatique straight after i woke up. the lady who prescribed it to me said i should keep using it and increased the dose. well, i ended up at my GP who run the blood test and told me i should almost double the dose of Levothyroxine and gave me an advice - stop experimenting. well, he did not have to say it twice... this is just my personal experience and if i had a choice i would not do it. im on Levo again, back to 50mg and kind of back to normal. however, i decided to change my diet. im going gluten free these days (my new years resolution) and will look into what supplements are beneficial. wish u all the best. j.

Thank you all for your responses, I appreciate your views. It's taken some time but I've decided to take the homeopathic remedy. It's called Thyroidinum and is made from sheep or calf thyroid. I've also got a constitutional remedy that I take along side Thyroidinum, this was recommended after a very in depth consultation with a homeopath.

I'm not on any form of synthetic thyroxine yet and would like it to remain that way for as long as possible, it just doesn't feel like the right course of treatment for me yet. Never say never though, who knows what will happen in the future.

My main priority is to feel well again and to concentrate on reducing the risk of developing another autoimmune condition, that's paramount for me hence the many lifestyle and diet changes that I have made.

Today I feel happier than I have in a long time, it's been a week since I started Thyroidinum, I believe there are some subtle symptom changes too. It's early days yet but I am remaining hopeful :) x

I think people have to look outside the box when it comes to thyroid problems. There is always a reason why your thyroid is not working properly. In your case it is hashimotos. The key to controlling hashimotos or any auto immune disease is to find your triggers and address them. Unfortunately time is of the essence with hashimotos as when the damage is done it's done. Some of the triggers include;

Gluten intolerance

Gut issues

Adrenal dysfunction

Stress

Viral infections

Parasitic infections

Fungal infections

Chronic inflammation

Blood sugar imbalances

Sex hormone imbalances

Vitamin D deficiency

Heavy metal toxicity

Environmental toxicity

I'm not suggesting that by fixing any above problems,it will be a certainty that your thyroid will work ok, but it will help you stay off medication for as long as possible. And if medication is still needed it will be a much smoother ride for you.

But to answer your question,I think any treatment will work, but only if everything else in your body is balanced.

Hope I helped.

Thank you, I agree with you absolutely. I've tackled quite a few of the items on your list, it was great to tick them off in my head :)

The only one I haven't done is to look for any parasitic infections, that is on my list to do also.

Here's hoping for a brighter future :) x

This excellent forum is full of people who haven't got on very well with thyroxine (that's kind of what it's there for!), but this tends to give thyroxine a very bad press. A very large number of people get on perfectly well on thyroxine. I am not having any problem with it, I just would like to take a bit more, and my doctor begs to differ. Personally I would not be afraid of at least giving it a try before looking at alternatives. If it works for you it is very simple and straightforward (and free!).

In Homeopathy, it is called Thyroidinum which is best in 30 potency. Thyroidinum 30 is the best alternative to Levoththyroxine or Synthroid or other harmful allopathic stuffs which unfortunately are addictive and have to be left bit by bit with time. I take thyroidinum 30 4drops twice a day before meal and don't stop allopathic stuffs all of a sudden as they are addictive. Along with thyroidinum 30 I take Lycopodium 30 twice a day 4drops. Homeopath is so good. It gives so much relief.
