Yes, its called a nodule. You're right to see your GP but there's no need to panic if it takes a few days to get an appointment. GP will probably want to order an ultrasound scan to note size and position of nodule and whether its pressing on your windpipe.
Wait and watch is the usual game for small nodules. Surgery is usually only necessary for larger nodules pressing on windpipe or gullet.
I had a lump about 20 years ago now. Not noticeable but palpable and made swallowing uncomfortable. Yes a scan is needed. Mine turned out to be a large cyst and I had a FNA which was relatively straightforward. I think the position made it easier than it might have been. The results from that were fine and it didn't reappear but you do need a scan so the medics can see what's going on.
