Hi I is purely the T3 content in Armour or T3 if on it with the T4 ( levo) that often can help weight loss, not always. It also lowers the TSH, why some docs so against it.It still needs the right diet etc which I am sure you know. My Endo always recommends the Diabetes diet for thyroid disease.

Really the answer always shows in the bloods. If T4 is high in range, should only be in top third, and the Free T3 is low in range, ideally near the top of range, but never over. irrespective of the TSH you would do better usually with some T3. However, if TS is low already most GP`s unless enlightened with not prescribe it. Most Endo`s will but if not seeing one, choose carefully before asking for a referral.

I hope this covers what you wanted to know?

I read, from one of your other responses, that you have also tried T3 for weight lose - is this true? If so then I would not advise anyone to take either T3 or NDT with weight reduction in mind.

If you do not get on with T4 then yes look for alternatives but do not look for alternatives purely to reduce you weight.

Sorry if this is not the answer you are looking for but taking thyroid meds to correct your weight can be dangerous - if you are still having symptoms apart from weight gain and you are struggling on T4 then fair enough but thyroid medication is not a slimming aid.

Thyroid hormone replacements should not be used only for weight loss.

It is understandable that weight gain whilst on levothyroxine is definitely a possibility. This is usually because the patient is not given enough to raise their metabolism and being kept within a range.

T3 and or dessicated thyroid hormones can raise the metabolism better than T4 alone but, as we know, it is rare to get it prescribed.

If it is the right replacement for you, you should be able to lose weight. Sadly it wasn't right for me and I found I needed t3 only to fell well. Even t3 only didn't enable me to lose weight. That only happened on raising my iron, ferritin, b12 and vitamin d to optimal levels, not just what the NHS thought was 'normal'. I am now able to lose weight very, very slowly :)

A lot of people are able to lose weight on the correct dose of thyroxine once their vitamins and minerals are optimal but it doesn't work for everyone.
