Lost 3.5 stone then the weight loss has stopped 😢

Hi all, I have Hashimoto’s and at last I’m on T3/T4 combination and I feel great. In 12 months I’ve lost 46 pound at SlimmingWorld and feel great. I haven’t changed a thing for the last 8 weeks but suddenly my weight has stopped coming off.......why? I want to loose another 2 stone but I’m feeling disheartened now.

I think the SlimmingWorld consultant thinks I’m lying when I say that my eating hasn’t changed!

I have increased my exercise by walking on a treadmill as I have more energy but I don’t think this will prevent weight loss will it?

Thanks in advance!

Angela

Hi seaside Susie

Simple answer is no! I have had to change surgeries as the practice with my amazing GP closed at Christmas and I’m petrified that the new practice will do blood tests and change my medication! Whilst they are prepared to do a repeat prescription and I feel well I’m keeping away........does this make sense?

OK, I understand, I manage to dodge many requests for thyroid tests at my surgery, but I keep an eye on everything by doing private tests.

You can get all those tests listed in one test bundle from either Medichecks or Blue Horizon.

For a full thyroid and vitamin panel, the following tests cover everything you need:

Medichecks Thyroid Check UltraVit medichecks.com/thyroid-func...

Medichecks have random offers on a Thursday, but this test was on offer last week so wont come around again for a while. In the meantime, code THYROIDUK will give 10% discount on any tests not on special offer.

Blue Horizon Thyroid Plus Eleven bluehorizonmedicals.co.uk/t...

The difference between the two tests are

B12 - Medichecks does Active B12 (measures what's available to be taken up by the cells) and BH measures Total B12

Total T4 - included with BH but not with Medichecks, not the most important test anyway.

CRP - BH does the standard CRP test which is an inflammation marker, Medichecks does CRP-high sensitivity which which is used to detect low-level inflammation which is thought to damage blood vessels which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.

BH requires 1 x microtainer of blood (0.8ml) for it's fingerprick test.

Medichecks requires 2 x microtainers of blood (each 0.8ml) for it's fingerprick test.

Both BH and Medichecks give the option of venous blood draw at extra cost.

Thank you so much for this, sorry to sound a bit stupid but where do I go to get my blood taken please?

Thanks again 🤗

Some members are lucky and their GP surgery will actually take blood for private tests, some charge, some don't.

Both Blue Horizon and Medichecks have information on their website about where to get blood drawn, private hospital or clinic. I think they also have a home phlebotomy service which would be more expensive, and you can't really stipulate that you want it done before 9am, you have to just take what they can offer time-wise.

If you want the venous test, remember to order the venous blood test kit not the fingerprick kit.

Just remind the doctor that the blood tests were introduced along with levothyroxine alone, i.e. T4. So if we take T4/T3, NDT or T3 alone, the results wont correlate.

I think few doctors would be aware that NDT contains all of the hormones a healthy gland would produce, so it is 'how the patient feels' which is the best guide if we take NDT or other than levothyroxine which is T4 only.

You may need a small increase in your dose and are you on a 3:1 dose or 4:1 which researchers have found to be the beneficial doses.

P.s. your weight loss person may be unaware that being hypo (low) thyroid means that our metabolism is low which causes weight gain and the commonest question on the forum is unexplained weight gain. Sometimes we also plateau in our weight whilst dieting.

Don't be discouraged as it takes a while for us to be diagnosed and doctors are apt to blame us for eating too much or the wrong foods. You can show the following to your Slimmming Consultant and may make her/him aware that hypothyroid people's weight gain is due to the condition and not the calorie intake.

stopthethyroidmadness.com/h...

Also we are dealing with a metabolism problem due to our thyroid gland not producing sufficient hormones. It is nothing to do with what we eat.

Thanks so much for your reply. I take 200mg of levothyroxine and 20mcg of liothyronine 3 x a day ( high dose I know but it works brilliantly!).

I’ve been on this dose for almost 2 years now and I feel fantastic after many years of being so very ill.

But because I’m on a high dose I don’t think an increase is possible is it?

Maybe I need to accept that my weight will plateau for a while and just be thankful that I’ve lost weight?

The fact that I’m able to exercise every day and am wearing a size 16 clothes feels like a miracle in itself!

The difference we feel when we've been taking the hormones for a while and then a symptom(s) occur it could be that we need an adjustment in dose (reduce or increase). Or if we've been taking a particular one and a change occurs - it could the fillers/binders in the tablet that might affect us.

Hi Angelarower ,

Sorry to hear that things have stalled a bit lately, but congrats on your amazing weight loss so far!

As well as potential thyroid hormone fluctuations, another cause for your plateau could actually be the success of your efforts so far. The lighter you are, the less energy you need to maintain your current weight, so sometimes what can help to get past a plateau is to re-assess food intake as weight loss progresses. I don't know how Slimming World works, but is there allowance for adjustments like that within the programme?

Best of luck with those next two stones :)

Thank you! SlimmingWorld does allow for adjustments so I think it’s time to have a change around as I’m a little predictable ( boring?!) in my food choices.

Thank you so much 😊
