Anybody else suffered from eye twitching while on thyroxine? Been driving me mad. I went to optician.

Went to the optician - had full check...all looks fine. This only started when I started taking my levothyroxine. I took thyro gold for a few days as an experiment and it calmed right down. Went on the levo and has come back.

I have had dry eye syndrome for many years and never had this annoying twitch on and off in both eyes till I started levo.

Got docs anyway so will mention it. I am still on just 50mg of levo.

Ask your pharmacist to try you on an alternative generic. The main two are Mercury Pharma & Actavis. Wockhardt is only available in 25mcg tablets. If that doesn't do the trick ask your GP to trial you a branded version.

I've been experiencing pain in and around my left eye & temple for over a year, since last RAI for whole body scan. No idea if it is related.Surgeon (Maxillo facial) noted tenderness in the trapezius & masseter muscles & didn't think it was TMJ. Dental x-ray ruled out dental reason. It persisted when I stopped taking Levo, the only side effect not to disappear. Paracetamol doesn't dent it. I'm overdue an eye exam.

There is no other make than those you mentioned that is licensed in the UK. (Even if there is some sort of difference between Eltroxin and Mercury Pharma levothyroxine that remains true - as Eltroxin is currently not available. :-) )

I used to have this very regular before being diagnosed, had it for years but just never questioned it and learned to live with it.I never really gave it any thought until i read this post but since i started my Levothyroxine Mercury Pharma as named above,i have not had this, not even a twinge!

Interesting. All doc has is this levothyroxine so I bought some thyro-gold to try at some point if it dont work out. I plan on seeing a specialist at some point when I can afford it.

I did have regular eye twitching, and had put it down to 'another thyroid thing' for years. Changing brands made no difference. Last year, however, my GP noticed that my B12 levels had fallen below range and I was put on a course of B12 injections. Within months all the little muscle twitches, including the eye twitch, had gone and have to date not returned.

Incidentally, as I suffered severe reactions to the B12 injections at the time, I have not been having the 3 monthly shots which I'm supposed to have to maintain my levels. At some stage, I suppose the muscle twitches could return...

Very interesting thanks....I dont know how my b12 is

I had it as a symptom.. before I got any medication not a drug reaction.. I don't get it anymore...

It's perfectly possible that it's just a hypo symptom and you need more drugs.. don't assume it's the medication..

I dunno really what to do about it. Just for the record I stopped my levothyroxine just to trial for a couple of days and it gradually went away. I will ask the doc what she thinks.

I experienced eye twitching only in the right eye for some time but then my thyroid levels have been fluctuating a lot for the past year ! Up and down, so with me I put it down to it being too high, not too low, but then it could just be a thyroid 'thing'.

My eye twitching went away after I started supplementing with magnesium for thyroid reasons. It was an accidental improvement (fixing the twitch I mean), I didn't know it would have that effect.

interesting thanks. I try and take magnesium when I remember.

I was having a period of vertigo recently. At the same time I was having eye twitches. Vertigo went away but eye twitches remained. I was off to the Chiropractor she is great better than the Doc. Told her about it she tested my eyes with a light and said she was sure it was a Nystagma, and had better see my Doctor. Saw him and he gave me an eye check with light but not as thorough as hers. I asked if it was a nystagma, the look on his face ! He said it could be and it was nothing to worry about it usually went away. It did go away after a short time. Worth Googling it. Just for the record I am just about to start magnesium glycinate chelated. Hope this helps.

Well levothyroxine has a half life of over 4 days so if you only stopped for a couple of days then that's good news because it PROBABLY MEANS that it was one of the fillers and not the levothyroxine that sets you off... which means another brand may suit you fine.. If not.. you may be better off with Naturthroid which has no fillers but is not available on the NHS so you'd have to buy it or get a private scrip.

I couldn't take levo or T3.. they both upset me.. so I'm on NDT

It usually takes 6 months sorry.....

You're twitching may go as you get used to the drug..

Interesting topic, thanks. I also have an eye twitch, only started when I began taking Thyroxine. I'm only on 50mcg (still!) and I suspect I desperately need more as my body feels badly out of sorts.

Regards.

UPDATE......Well it seems to have ebbed off now.....I upped my vit d and selenium a bit maybe it was that....I also lowered the brightness on my computer screen lol in case but I think the extra supplements maybe helped. Im back on 50mg of levo and no twitching so maybe its not that or my body got used to it.

hi,

i was also on levothyroxine and have the same eye twitching side effect. has it been permanent for anyone? its been a month and a half since i stopped the medication and the twitching hasn't gone away. I've been to several neurologist and optomologist and no one seems to know how to fix it. This eye twitching started 2 wks after i started the medication.

You probs should see an opt about it anyway. It takes a while for meds to get out of the system. What are you on now? Im T3 only as I dont convert well at all.

Update. Im on t3 only just now and the eye twitching stopped a while back.

I just began taking Levo 50mg, and after week 2 my right eye is twitching uncontrollably. Never has before, and I have perfect vision. I do believe it's a side effect and that lessening the dosage is necessary!

I have the same problem and when I told my endocryinologist she acted like I was crazy. Levothyroxine makes my right eyelid twitch. It drives me crazy. Do you still have this problem or did you get a new medication that solved the eye twitch?

I was searching eye twitches with levothyroxine when I saw this question. Sounds like a common reaction.

I was searching eye twitching and thyroid medication when I found this. I just switched from Levo to NP Thyroid and my left eye twitches badly after I take my medicine. It’s Driving me mad. I’m gonna get some magnesium to see if that helps.

When you say eye twitching, which part of the eye? I’ve started on levothyroxine and having random eye spasms at random times. This is under my eye (eye bag)
