You are experiencing the same as I did before I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid.I could hardly walk and my GP sent me for Physio for my Gluteal muscles in the buttocks. However a second TSH test revealed that I did need thyroxine as I'd previously thought. The Physio told me she thought that once I was on my thyroxine it would get better ......and she was right......it did! All that was 11 yrs. ago.

Are you on Thyroxine already though? If so,may be you need further testing to see what your present TSH level is?

Perhaps someone else will advise you on that....Hope you get sorted.

Hi thanks for the quick reply. It only really started after I started taking the Levo about 4 years ago now, but it is getting worse. I really don't want to go to my GP as he makes me feel like a hypochondriac. I am on 150 of Levo

Doctors like to do that, don't they? Especially with women. It's disgraceful. You need medical advice. Make it clear that you have concerns and want them addressed. Take a list of questions you want to ask with you. Make sure he answers each question so that you understand it.

My (female) doctor wants to treat my thyroid related pain with painkillers. When I said I didn't think that was a long term solution she snapped 'well what do you want me to do about it?' so I told her: I want an appointment with the podiatrist, please. And I got one. Quite quickly. It does help if you know the outcome you want. So see if you can work that out from Q and As on here before you go.

I, too, had awful pain after starting levothyroxine. Sometimes we may be sensitive to binders/fillers and trying another make may make a difference.

Also, you may need an increase in your medication. This is a link which states the different thyroid gland medications available. One of which may suit you better.

If you can get a copy of your latest thyroid gland blood test results from the surgery and post on a new question, with the ranges, members will comment.

Hi there shaws....after only talking to you yesterday regarding pain and muscle issues,it seems to be a constant concern for people doesn't it?

I've often had a question mark over medication and fillers as my own pain increased corresponding with my gradual raise in dosage of my MP Levo.

However I'm going to continue with looking at my diet and leaving out certain foods for the time being.

I decided on and have ordered Mary Shoman's newly revised ( 2012) book ..The Thyroid Diet Revolution...Manage your Master Gland.

I will report anything I learn which might be of interest as I go along.X

I hope it works for you as it is trial and error, whether it be with thyroid gland medications or diet.

I am sure this won't apply to you, so don't panick. However after being on thyroxine for 12 years - nobody informed me calcium levels may be affected and subsequently I had problems walking as I lost bone in my hips which resulted in my having to have a hip replacement. Do make sure your calcium levels are good - oddly enough milk products don't help but leafy greens etc do and also if they are low, an algea based (not rock based like AdCal)is the calcium supplement to take.

My calcium level is 2.11. Not a clue what all this means on this print out.

Hi Carrola - I haven't heard of an algea-based supplement before. Can you give me more info.please.

I got really bad lower back and hip pain when I started on Levothyroxine. I was put on a 'full replacement' 150mcg dose when Auto-Immune Thyroiditis (Hashi's) was diagnosed. After 'discussion' about the pain with my Endo and a raise to 175mcg because bloods showed I wasn't yet at the upper end of the ranges, I managed to persuade them to add some T3. I'm now on a mean 142.5mcg dose (150mcg then 125mcg on alternate days) of Levothyroxine plus 10mcg Liothyronine daily.

It seemed to eradicate the lower back pain and somewhat lessen the hip pain almost straight away but today the hip pain is a lot worse - it seemed to worsen when the cold and dark of Winter drew in, which also coincided with me getting a Cold.

I just got out my office chair and had to brace my hands on my hips for a while to be able to start staggering forwards before a walk down the stairs and back up seemed to loosen me off a bit, but now my hips are quietly burning away as I sit in my chair again. I've not been like this since starting on the Levo.

Hi sootypea. Thank you for starting this. I thought I was being a hypochondriac too. Though im Hyper with Graves. Im suffering with my right hip. Went to docs xray result no problem! Cant sit comfortably or walk far or even hoover for long. Can I get doc to do a blood test for calcium to check. Hv suddenly also put weight on over last 2 months after losing it suddenly when first diagnosed 6 mnths ago. Which isn't going to help. Trying to find willpower n determination to stop putting wrong food in my mouth! Did a 1 mile walk last week on treadmill have suffered since. Feel such a wimp. Hope pain eases for you quickly.

Please - I hope all these people with back and/or hip pain get themselves checked for arthritis, rather than assuming it is all thyroid-related! I do get worried, reading posts here, how many people seem to be blaming their faulty thyroids for everything! I speak as one who has had a hip replaced (twice, as the first prothesis was problematic) and my back straightened out with two rods and a lot of screws, all while taking my levothyroxine faithfully every morning. (The hypothyroidism comes from my mother's family, the arthritis from my father's.)
