Hi there Katy x3- your're very young to have this to worry about sweetie. I really hope you've got some support at home, ask for help there first.

What do you mean about 'intake'? medication or food? (first rule - please eat well and regularly)

What usually happens here on the forum, is we ask what your actual blood test result are - so folks can comment with suggestions to help, blood tests are a start but symptoms are the key really, and your age is another factor, I'm sorry you're feeling so bad and your doctor should investigate this further, but obviously you're looking for some more help so here's some pointers.

1). you have a diagnosis of Hypothyroid? and on medication for it - good

2). your medication is not yet at the correct level- not so good, people report it does take a while to achieve the correct individual dose.

3). go back to your doctor and say exactly how you are feeling

4). you can ask for additional tests to check levels of irons (folate, ferritin, B12) and Vitamin D (look it up its not just a vitamin) correct levels may make you feel better - so worth sorting out first.

5). Don't let them say you are 'just' depressed, if they've found something wrong with your thyroid, go with that first. If you can get your thyroid sorted then depression symptoms are usually sorted too. (others report this ). Low Thyroid output is responsible for all sorts of stuff, so you are not on your own.

I hope this helps in some way to start - please let us know how you get on. Jane x

i meant "intake" as in meds/mg's- and i dont have a copy of my blood results, i have never thought to ask. I have been to the doctor about 3 times this year complaining of the symptoms, each time they do bloods for hypo and anemia, both come back okay (i dont have anemia, and it is not genetic in my family although i get symptoms of sickle cell anemia as the doctor has said)

& Thank You

Often the TSH can be 'still in range' but folk still feel unwell, the actual FT4 and FT3 hormones need testing too. If your GP won't increase your dose you can optimise your existing dose by checking vital nutrients (minerals /vitamins) which are building blocks to help your meds (hormone) work (and eating well & regularly goes without saying)- also things like taking them only with water and away from food (I see you do this already)- or try taking at bedtime (as others have said). You can also have a look at the TUK main site to learn a bit more. J :D

Hi Katy,

Make sure your GP is testing for TSH, T4 and Free T3, Quite common to suddenly need T4 ,levo and then add T3. depends on those results. Also make sure you have had the other related tests.Always have a print out from the receptionist of all blood tests with vital ranges.

Best wishes,

Jackie

If that does not work find yourself a good Endo, research , then ask for a referral.

Best wishes, I am sure this is a blip but soon you will be sorted again.

Yes you are young to be suffering with such things but I suppose age does not matter if you are prone to things ..get al the help you can do not let them fob you off get support ..I am sorry you suffer such misery because that is what it it is ..some doctors just have not got the understanding of thyroid problems ..and knowone can see your pain and discomforts peole suffer because it is misunderstood .. ..I know and I am old enough to be your mother, for years I had to fight to get attention for my thyroxine ..I also think it should be monitored more regulary my surgery seem to overlook it more so when you are older ....Good Luck to you on this journey to getting better ....Margaret xxxand God Bless

Hi Katy,

So sorry you are suffering and welcome aboard.

Firstly, do you know if you have straight thyroid trouble or an auto immune illness which is attacking the thyroid - this will make a lot of difference as with the auto immune illness can come vitamin and gut issues.

Your thyroid medication working well depends of how well your body can process it and there are many things that can stop your body doing this.

Our thyroid medication needs a certain set of vitamins to be optimal to work to its full potential and these are B12, VitD, iron, ferritin (the amount of iron your body has stored) and folates. If any of these are low, and by low I mean low for thyroid sufferers and not low according to the NHS (for example the NHS range for B12 is approx 190 - 900, so if you are at 250 then, according to the NHS, you are fine but a thyroid sufferer needs their B12 to be over 500 and nearer 700) your thyroid medication may not be working properly, so the first thing I would do is to go back to your GP's and ask for these tests.

Every test you have, whether it be bloods or anything else, you need to get copies of so that you can monitor your own progress and keep an eye on what the GP is doing. This is really important as self monitoring can be crucial when seeing hosp consultants or other doctors. You are entitled, by law, to have copies of all your tests so don't let anyone tell you differently. If you get some resistance to this let us know on here and we can help.

Has anyone told you to take your thyroid medication, at least, two hours away from any food or drink (except water) as either can hinder your bodies ability to absorb your medication properly. When you do take your thyroid meds Katy? Lots on here find it better to take them last thing at night, with water, so that the body can absorb them over night with no food or drink to hinder it.

Shout if you have any more questions.

I think i have straight thyroid trouble, although my mum developed the same problem when she was pregnant with me, but none of my siblings have the problem.

i think monitoring would be a good idea, and i will be doing that in the future.

and i have been taking it in the morning, with no food until 4 hours later... i think i may start taking it at night,

Thank you!

Even with this type of thyroid illness your levothyroxine will not work unless the five vital vitamins I named are checked and at optimal levels.

Please ask your GP to check them and then post the results on here. If you do not have your latest thyroid and iron results to hand then phone the surgery and ask the receptionist to read out the results (with ranges as the results are no good without ranges) to you and then you can ask another question on here about them.

p.s. Just a tip when using this site - if you want to answer someone in particular then use the "reply to this" button underneath their answer, that way they get an email to say you have made contact - its saves people missing answers.

Only guessing but if you were started on 75 at 11 then I'm expecting that you have grown a bit since then. If that's the scenario I would expect you to need a little more on some days a week
