Hi Georgie,

Are they wanting to scan your neck? Or your head?

When did they tell you this?

Do you have any problems with having a CT scan? I've not had one but I don't think that the experience is too unpleasant.

If you can try to fill in the gaps, we can try to answer your questions. :-)

What do they want to scan, Georgie? That will help people to answer your question properly :)

A CT scan isn't too bad at all. I prefer it to an MRI any day :)

I have had a brain scan but think that was an MRI. That wasn't too bad and I was allowed to bring in a CD of my choice to listen to to help me relax.

Yes please can you clarify what you are having scanned ? Xx

I had a CT scan on my thyroid, they gave me very weak RAI and then scanned my neck to see if my hyper symptoms were caused by a diffuse goitre or a multinodular goitre.

I had already had a subtotal thyroidectomy in my teens and this was when I was in my 30s. The scan revealed that I had several -hotspots' because I had developed a multinodular goitre which is quite common with Graves'. The importance of doing this is to establish if it can be controlled by carbimazole or not. A multinodular goitre is less likely to respond to carbimazole and so they are more likely to decide to offer you a TT or RAI - it was the best thing they could have done because the nodules were completely out of control - hence the reason everyone just thought I had gone insane! I probably was!

Anyway, it is good that they are going to find out what is really happening, it is a simple procedure and totally painless. The machine that was used for me was just like an arc over my head, not nearly so claustrophobic as some scans I have had.

I do hope this helps you.

If it is for the thyroid in your neck they are looking for nodules etc, if it is in your brain they may be looking for changes in your brain, mine showed that the thyroid, parathyroid and aldesterone has caused very unstable hypertension and this had caused a small silent stroke and I now have permanent white matter changes and chronic hypoxia ischemic issues. They may also check the pituatory this way. If it is a total body they are looking for any issues in your body. They may follow up with a radioactive scan which has more definition or an MRI of the brain or a bone scan.

Hi Is it for your parathyroid? in which case it is a nuclear scan too , two done together. However, that would have been precipitated by high PTH and calcium and D.( for you). Scan can be anywhere, clue is who recommended it. Not like an MRI, the lying still does not last long but it is uncomfortable.mostly done with dye. If kidneys really bad ( Us and Es) it is too dangerous to have the dye.If on Amioderone and for PTH cannot have the dye. I hope that helps.Nodules etc on thyroid show in an ultrasound. If nodules, then needle biopsy under another ultra sound, radiologist.Ct`s are high radiation but I have them a lot, many times a year as I cannot have MRI`s, They do give different data too.
