Poor concentration and memory is stopping me from working!

I have been diagnosed with underactive thyroid and more recently hashimotos. I am very lucky to be seeing one of the recommended endo's from the list produced by this group. However I have just been 'let go' from my current job because of all the silly mistakes I have been making. This is not the first time this has happened to me and now am at an all time low. I feel useless, I never used to be like this. I used to be a teacher and now I am incapable of a simple office job! Please someone tell me is this normal for this condition and if so how do you get around it because at the minute I feel like a waste of space.

Yes, entirely normal! However, you can feel well again. Once you get your thyroid medication sorted out your brain function should return and that 'fog' should lift, as should the depression.

Other things to consider are vitamin and mineral levels; particularly serum iron, ferritin, folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin D. If you aren't already doing so, it might be a good idea to take a B vitamin complex and a separate B12 supplement (methylcobalamin is best). These alone may help improve your cognitive function to some extent. I you get them tested, do this before you start taking supplements so you get a better indication of any problems. For example, if your B12 is low you may have pernicious anaemia which will require B12 injections.

Teaching is hard work at the best of times. I am doing a TA role at the moment with some teaching responsibilities and am planning to do the GTP (or whatever it is called now) next year. I couldn't have dreamt of that a few years ago. In fact I didn't think I would ever work again! I'm so much better now than I was then :)

Hopefully you will get your brain back soon too :)

I'm sorry you have had an upsetting time recently and, hopefully, once on optimum medication life will be good again.
