The sad bit about that story apart from that gent's account of the consequences of longstanding failure of doctors to diagnose what sounds like it was basic primary hypothyroidism (and which which reads very true - if nothing else i suffered fainting in the middle of the night and waking up on the floor when i got up to pee back in the 70s and early 80s - that was the first credible explanation i'd every heard for it) is the happy ever after story at the end where he found the holy grail and by weeks later was much improved.

That isn't to my mind typical - many of us that have suffered long term undiagnosed hypothyroidism (most?) seem to end up with a whole cascade of secondary consequences that make it almost impossible for us to respond properly to levothyroxine only.

Which lobs us into NIGHTMARE 2 - 'no, your thyroid is normal, maybe you're feeling a bit depressed.'

Which can go on ad infinitum...

The stories in the papers are always like this! *sigh* I guess people want a quick 'happy' ending....

Would it really hurt that much to have someone like Lyn who only became 99% well after moving over to NDT.

Or one of the many people on here who are only finally functioning 'normally' after taking T3 only...?!

I suspect that perhaps once you move into the other meds, it all just gets a bit technical for the average person.......

Ta Louise. :) I should have said that it's great to see thyroid matters getting that sort of exposure.

In circumstances that at least contribute to an understanding of the real world vagaries experienced by patients - and illustrate the limits of medicine. (which latter prove so often to be down to bureaucratic imperatives and human foibles - and nothing to do with technical/knowledge limits)

Anything that busts the bubble of complacency/unrealistic expectation has got to be good.......

I see that my comment mentioning both Thyroid UK and the Scottish Parliament Petition was refused...... :(

Mine went in- probably as I didn't post any links. I just made a general case about lack of interest in us..

I also queried a later poster -who said large goiters were ignored. This, I couldn't buy into readily.

That was when doctors actually listened to patients !!! Nowadays the practice manager signs up so many patients they have to ration time. But then, they are more interested in the money these days and rarely care for a patient from cradle to grave.

I spoke with Ian last month when his story was first published in the Guardian. He explained that the article was edited an awful lot and again with the Daily Mail. Since penning them he has experienced some of what many T4 only patients suffer, a creeping in of residual symptoms. I think he will keep on writing and he carries on his journey and he is looking in to other treatments and doctors already.

I bought that paper;was good to see anything about the struggle people go through to get a diagnosis.but it made me think;i have been suffering hypo/hashis for 13yrs without diagnosis/treatment;i not going on ano 8yrs thats for sure(eveb if have to self-med).was 'interesting' to read about some symptons that i havnt experienced myself;the loss of sense of smell and the fainting, also migraines(r they v common?)was scary to be reminded abouthow hypothyroid can leed to 'bone loss';is that reversed/stopped when u begin med? Also i didnt knowthatthe immune system actually targets thethyroid hormone receptor sitesin the muscles.i do suffer muscle weakness(esp thighs!);and aching/tired legs after too much walking.and the throat screaming thing..is that common?!(why does it become scar tissue?i kbow we are all individual n have slightly different symptoms..i have a symptom ,that is maybe the worst one i suffer with(in that it can get so intolerable at times)but none else seems to mention;maybe cos its so hard to describe;when i am 'inactive' for too long(liying down or sit)esp in morn and then start be active again i get this awful sluggish feeling, mainly felt in tummy(its not constipation,as i dont have that often!)that seems to be due to every thibg that slowed down ,trying to get back 'in motion 'again,i guess.but it is indescribable (anyone who hasnt got hypo wouldnt understand how awful it is.)sometimes my body seems to be slowing down so much(like after a longish bus ride recently)that i think my heart will stop!(just dreadful;feel like body will go into complete shut-downif stayed inert any longer!)sorry to go on about, but as said, it is one of the more unbearable symptoms of mine(i think i prefer exhaustion!which is ano main symptom).does anyone else suffer this symptom(or heard of it?)

Why are almost all the posts and replies I'm seeing now Aug 2015, saying 2yrs Ago? I written a couple of new posts this week can't see them or my replies, except to 1 person about tinnitus, who had messaged me back. I only have an iPad too small for the number of emails HU send if electing to receive, I don't, so just go to my specific bits, I.e. headway and Thyroid UK. I'm losing the will to live!
