I've had a cough for 5 years. X-ray taken and according to GP nothing showed up. This was however the same GP who failed to diagnose my hypothyroidism.

One of these days I will ask to look at my full medical records.

Just a suggestion - as your neck is stiff would it be worthwhile seeing an osteopath or physio?

Hi! Sorry to hear you are experiencing these symptoms. I have had Radioactive Iodene Treatment to kill off my Thyroid, which was just loopy and intermittently overactive then underactive on an unpredictable cycle for nearly 7 years before they finally decided to kill it! Therefore - I now have no active Thyroid. Since treatment, my voice disappeared most of the time, and I was a persistent cougher! I had so many different examinations over the years, but never got any answers or reasons. Eventually, I had a slightly larger dose of T3, mixed with my T4, plus a full month of decent strength antibiotics - and finally got rid of the cough! So I would say see the GP and ask for a trial of antibiotics if nothing else has worked and try and shift it that way. Good Luck, and let us know how you do!

Incidentally - I have looked but not found on here - some sort of system to point out where people are reading about things to specify post treatment, pre treatment, overactive and underactive - because I feel those still suffering, post Thyroid removal/Radioactive therapy, may be confused with information and advice - as if you have NO thyroid, the suggestions will surely be totally different? Just a thought!

Hi i have Hashimotos thyroiditis and a multi nodular goitre. I have been best i have been for 8 years this year apart from the cough. It got so bad a few weeks ago i was struggling to breath so was whipped in to a&e. i had ecg and all sorts of tests. Two weeks ago i hAd emergeny scan on neck and had to see ent doc who put the camera down my nose. All the coughjng and choking ftom the years i have gad thjs problem has caused inflamation of my throat and also swelling. Having barium swallow scans next week to find out whT is causing this. Put on 40mg of omoprazol instead of 20mg and seems to be working. Havent coughed since.
