Hi I have been told I have an underactive thyroid & will be on thyroxine & would like to know do you lose or gain weight with this treatment
Like everything in this thyroid world we live in one size does not fit all. I have never been able to lose weight no matter what thyroid medication I have been on but a friend from this site who also has an underactive thyroid is only 8st.
Have you got any blood results you can post on here and what level of medication have you been started on?

Hi Moggie I was only got told yesterday from the hospital so they said that I was subclinical hypothyroidism T4 and T3 were low but they are giving me 50 of thyroxine I start on it on mon. Alixx
Hi, aliharry. Its impossible to tell for sure. But most people with hypothyroidism gain weight more easily rather than loose. Taking medication in the dosages that are right for you might help loose the extra pounds.
Hi aliharry, I've been on 50 mcg of Oroxine (thyroxine) daily for 7 years and haven't gained any weight nor lost any. I do try and walk about 3km a day and eat sensibly, so weight has not been a problem for me. Tiredness and fatigue have been a problem on and off and last year I suffered shallow breathing problems (never found out what the cause was, thought it was the beginning of anxiety/ panic attacks, possibly caused by T4 medication). The locum doctor was going to increase my dosage to 75mcg but I was reluctant to do this for I thought the T4 medication might make my breathing problem worse. The locum doctor disappeared from our country practice and I never got to change my doseage. Meanwhile after a Perth summer with lots of sunlight and swimming in the ocean my vit D levels went up from 60 to 91 and as a result my tiredness levels dropped, my liver function tests were no longer elevated, and the shallow breathing more or less disappeared. All of this happened without altering my thyroxine doseage. My white blood cell count is still lower than it should be but it seems to have stabilised over the past few years. I have an appointment to see a haemotologist. Can anyone advise what questions to ask the specialist about what is causing low white blood cell count and low neutrophils?? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks Ozthyroid
Thank you. I am making an effort today as I have had a lot of junk food e.g chocolate and white bread so I am trying to eat healthy and cut down on my coffee drinks as I have 3 to four a day. Its the tiredness that gets to me and I have a lot of headaches. Hope that you feel better soon. Alix
