I'm due to have full thyroid to be taken out soon what can I expect from the op and reason is because I have nodules growing

Hi don t worry about the actual surgery it is straight forward.Be prepared to have drains in for 24hrs I felt poorly for a week and was on calcium tablets for 6 wks because your parathyroid s get disturbed during surgery .You will be put on thyroxine immediately after surgery I was on 125 but am now on 100 .make sure you take the thyroxine two hours before food no one told me this in hospital I only found out on this site.It will take you about 3mths to get back to normal your neck will be sore for quite a while.

I had a multinodular goitre which was growing quite large hence removal.keep using this site if you have any questions or problems I wish I had found it before my surgery.

Good luck with your op be positive and be prepare for it to take a while to get thyroxine level right .

I also have cyst in the top part of chest and not sore what else is there until they do ct scan, do they take this out the same time, also starting to notice that if I laugh I cough a lot is this normal, can I carry on with cycling and running as going in hot and cold places does as well.

Hi I can t comment on the cyst as I didn't t have that problem.I did have problem with coughing while laughing probably due to goitre restricting the throat.this is better since surgery but I still get a tickly throat .There a risk of vocal chord damage during surgery but this is rare and mine was fine.

You are right to keep as active as possibly it is important to be fit before surgery.

I didn't t have problem with temperature control before surgery but now find it difficult to cool down if I over heat.

Make sure you ask your dr or surgeon about any concerns you have write them down before you see them then you won t forget .

I had a multinodular goitre (total thyroidectomy) removed in November 11. The surgery was fine. The wound was like a sausage in my neck for a few weeks (I believe they roll the skin with internal stitches), but when the suasage subsided I was left with a very neat scar that looks like a wrinkle. It really is an amazing scar.

Following the thryoidectomy, I was put on T3 hormone (leothyronine I think) for a month, and I absolutely thrived. Then, the T3 was replaced with T4 (levothyroxine), and my dose was started at quite a high level (200mcg daily). Over the course of the last 18 months it has been gradually reduced and I am now on 150mcg daily, but I still think it's too much because I am still getting the sweats, fuzzy head and achy joints. I've been told that too much hormone produces basically the same symptoms as too little. It is a struggle to get your levels right, but I think I'm getting there now.

I will keep in touch, but I have got cyst as well not sure what they are going to do they are in my chest somewhere until I have ct scan not sure what they are going to do
