Hyperactive thyroid: Hi totally confused, just... - Thyroid UK
Hyperactive thyroid
Sounds odd. Do you have any actual test results?
(We have seen the odd mis-interpretation of results and there are extremely rare cases where things are very strange.)
What dose are you on? (I assume carbimazole and, maybe, propranolol?)
Rod
Carbimazole 5 mg twice a day and propanolol 16 mg a day simvastatin 10 mg also have very large multi nodular goiter which i will be having surgery to remove, struggling to lose the extra weight that i have gained over the last year, t3 normal t4 normal very low tsh
Please could you post actual results with ranges for fT3, fT4 and TSH? Thanks. Clare x
Hi i dont have them with me at the moment but will do as soon as i can
Have hunted out my results tsh .266' t4 1.07' t3 3.3 does this make any sense
Hi Tatty, I am exactly same as you! Put weight on before diagnosis and Doc was expecting underactive thyroid, but bloods consistently came back overactive. 9 months on carbimazole and I am now within normal range. I hope to be able to lose the weight once I am off the carbimazole in August.
Well I don't like to be pigeonholed, however it would be nice to have a straight forward illness I'm just glad I am not alone with the weight gain. A "very unusual case" the endocrinologists have called it.
Do not be fooled. Most of the hypers on here have had weight gain, some of it whilst on meds. Cannot for the life of me think why endos are so confused. It is mentioned on loads of scientific papers.
Plus dry skin and tiredness and thinning brittle hair are also common side effects. Many of the same problems can be seen with hypers and hypos.
Some are different. These tend to be the palpitations and hot sweats, bulging eyes.
It also depends on why you are overactive. Is it the nodules or Graves?
Very large multi nodular goiter, dont have any palpitations hot sweats or bulging eyes
Very bad skin rashes, arm and legs feel like lead weights,
,medication not having much affect hopefully it will be affecting my blood results so i can have the surgery
Hi
I have put on weight and the only time I lose it is when my bloods are normal, whatever normal is. my hair has gone thinner and frizzy fortunately I have thick hair so it is not too noticeable.
I was told weight gain is more common than people imagine with an overactive thyroid.
Hope this helps, I get so tired and some days I just want to curl up and sleep I would love a dose of this energy we are supposed to have.
Hope everything goes well for you
I was at my highest weight when I was hyper (although this was never properly diagnosed). I had palpitations, a goitre, weight gain, depression, and the most almighty appetite! I was always hungry and if I didn't eat every two hours I would feel like I could quite easily murder someone! My kids used to say "uh oh mum's having a food strop!" I had half of my thyroid removed several years ago, and then unfortunately another lump developed and so just under 5 years ago I had my entire thyroid removed and now take 175 mcg of thyroxine. I still have quite a large appetite and do still eat pretty regularly, but the murderous feelings have thankfully subsided! If I am hungry I start to feel a bit "wobbly" but my weight has now stabilised. I'd like to lose a bit more, but I think that's the case for most women. I hope you manage to get your diagnosis sorted and that the surgery helps stabilise things for you. Best of luck.
thanks for your comments, this whole thyroid thing is so complicated hyper, hypo, and all these tsh levels T3 T4 i wonder if i will ever feel ok i have the weight gain large goiter no appetite but all my blood tests show i am hyper, confused totally i am scared of the surgery but know its my only option
