I have just been diagnosed as having an over active thyroid and prescribed carbimazole 40 mg a day I have developed a terrible itch throughout my body and I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of side-effect and if so how did you overcome it?

Can you take a antihistime if you are taking carbimazole to prevent constant itch
Hi
I have that only occasionally now but I take antihistamines no-one has ever told me not too and it does help. It is usually my scalp that itches the most but within ten minutes of taking a pill it goes.
I don't know if that will help you at all. I havent had anything nasty happen. Hopefully someone on here will be able to give you good advice. I have been taking Carbimazole for 18 months now.
Good luck
Thanks for the information, it is my scalp that is the worst but do also get it all over my body so going to get some antihistamine today then. You mention that you have been taking carbimazole for 18 months and has it reduced your levels. I have an appointment with endo team in 4-6 weeks and have been told I need to get a scan on my neck because of the swellling. Do you start to feel better as I feel so out of sorts? Just looking to see if their is light at the end of the tunnel.
Hi there I have been on and off carbimazole for 7 years now the hospital has signed me off as theres nothing else theycan do I have also been diagnosed with eye disease and attending the hospital so ive been told that the iodine drink is not an option for me now I was hoping that taking thedrink would make everything go away. I have put on loads of weight andcant lose it because the doctor kept me on 60mg for 4 weeks too long and im stuck with the weight im not a big eater. Im really not happy with the way ive been treated by the hospital.
Hi
my bloods aren't normal but I have been taken loads of vitamins and minerals in an attempt to help myself because my Endo is absolutely useless all she wants to do is either give me RAI or thyroidectomy. Neither of which I am prepared to consider at the moment.
This is a really brilliant site for information and has helped me so much I still struggle a lot my main problem is exhaustion. I put weight on as well, I think I could have coped if I had been overactive and lost weight. I have never been heavy or a big eater but I am carrying half a stone that I cannot shift. I think all thyroid disease is awful because people just do not understand how hard it is and how little help you get from the medical profession.
If I can give you any advice do lots of research and do not let anyone bully you into doing anything you don't want. What is right and works for some may not be right for you. Do not expect miracles from doctors and if you find a good one who listens refuse to see anyone else.
I hope it all works out okay for you.
Hi,
I was diagnosed with serious Grave's in December and was immediately put on 40mg carbimazole and propanolol- after a few weeks I developed debilitating itching and was given anti-histamines on prescription as a result. Fortunately within a few days the itching subsided so the answer is YES. I was able to stop taking them after a couple of weeks. Hope you feel better soon.
Just to add that I was not suffering from Graves after all but a benign toxic adenoma (hot nodule) so am now waiting to have R.A.I as this will never right itself and I will only have an operation as a last resort.
Hi
I was diagnosed with severe hyperthyroidism in March 2012 and put on Carbimazole (15 mg/day) and Propranolol. The first week the itching drove me insane!! But after that it gradually went away, so hopefully yours will disappear as well!
I am now off medication since 20 March and I am doing well Fingers crossed for a long lasting remission!
All the best!
Thanks everyone for your replies - I feel that I am very much scratching around in the dark as I have just been diagnosed with this horrendous condition. Because I am asthmatic I can't be given propananol to help with the horrendous palpitations and anxiety that I am constantly experiencing. Hospital advised that I would have endo follow up in 4-6 weeks so I have another 4 weeks to see them. What I would like to know is an idea of what I should be asking them in relation to my levels as they mentioned when I had been admitted to hospital that my level had came back at 40 but not sure what they were referring to - confused.com. Any advice given would be greatly appreciated.
I get this too, my hands and scalp mainly , it is thankfully intermittent but seems to be getting worse not better. Anti histamine sometimes helps but not always. Is there an alternative drug at all?
Yes, I checked with the pharmacist and they said it would be fine.
If the itching is keeping you awake at night, it’s worth discussing with the pharmacist as the typical one a day ‘hay fever’ formulation may not be the best option.
