Lump in throat! History of mother having hashimotos thyroiditis.

Dear all , I am starting on my thyroid journey and have come across this blog!

I have been feeling ill , tired under the weather for a long time, for a month or more I have felt a lump low down in my throat the feeling has gradually got worse , sometimes at night I feel as though I will choke :-(

My mum had hashimotos thyroiditis and had most of her thyroid removed due to lots of nodules . I fear I am going to have the same, had blood tests yesterday and have ultrasound booked for next Thursday

Do anyone else have similar ??

I haven't but if you get a copy of the blood tests from the surgery, complete with the ranges and post them in a new question, someone will comment upon them. Usually, doctor's say 'it's in normal range' and you are none the wiser as to the blood test results which you should keep for future reference.

I had hypo but my first symptom was hoarseness which all doctors, Specialists ignored completely.

As I look back, I told a doctor about it a long time ago. At the time, the old medical books called women with this issue "globus hystericus", almost hypochondriacs. Now, I'm thinking it was the beginning of thyroid attacks and years later, full blown Hashimoto.

Some autoimmune diseases are due to leaky gut which means the lining of the gut has been compromised and causes foreign particles or bacteria to enter the blood stream causing the immune system to go into high gear. Why it attacks the thyroid gland, I don't know, but in RA it attacks joints, and on and on. Antibiotics are one of the main causes of gut permeability which attempts to heal itself if it has a good blood supply. The second issue is that stress can cause enough tension to keep that healthy repair from occurring. So the key issue would be to replenish the flora of the gut which has been killed off with antibiotics and relaxing muscle tension through stress reduction to heal. The same gut issue would probably also result in deficiencies of nutrients.

Hi Jsharks.

Can I ask if the lump in the throat felling was constant, or did it come & go? I ask as this is something I'm experiencing and am looking into it.

I think it can also come and go. We all can react differently to autoimmune attacks but I've read thyroiditis can last for years as unbelievable as it sounds. If you aren't being treated, read up on ways to restore thyroid function...other factors like menopause or adrenal disfunction may be stressing your gland.

I have had this for almost 3 years on and off, more prominent around my periods, I have had a scan and all clear, except multinodular goitre. At night it seems like I will choke or I am being strangled. Deffo related to thyroiditis. you wont choke its the feeling you will, this will make you anxious. moreover, the neck, thryroid swells , the feeling of lump in the throat is because of the swings between hypo and hyper. Hashimotos is the culprit, the post above has give some good advice.

Try not to over worry and wait for your scan, i am sure you will feel less anxious when you have had your scan.

good luck x

Thankyou , the lump I feel in my throat was also felt by my gp , he didn't believe me at first. When I described it he said it was because I was anxious , he then checked and felt it for himself! Needless to say he apologised and agreed the best thing to do was the tests . Marissa, has surgery for the goitre been mentioned for you or does the goitre not give you symptoms? X

sorry its took me so long to reply, in terms of the goitre, my nodules are really small, nevertheless I still have symtoms. A second scan showed nodes not growing. no surgery but a host of symptoms. I am sure you will be ok, I am glad you are having it checked out.

I was just recently diagnosed with hashimoto but spent a year thinking that the pain in my throat was globus. My throat pain feels like a lump, but also spikes with a stinging pain that comes on when i'm anxious. I dont know if anxiety is causing the feeling in my throat or if its the other way around. i started taking medication for my thyroid that has pulled me levels back to a normal range, but i still have the anxiety and pain in my throat. My look on it is, there is never really a simple unified answer. Anxiety is something that occurs in life with or without having a thyroid disorder. After spending a few months thinkng that the throat pain was strictly due to my thyroid, im now back to looking at globus and how the two have the potential to be intertwined but is not always necessarily the case. massaging the area really helps, and then small massages on the back of my neck right at the base of my skull really help to alleviate the globus pain. Its best to get someone besides yourself to do it. That's the best thing that's worked for me so far. Its not always the most convenient, but it helps.
