Iodine was a compulsory additive to table salt to make sure that Brits did not get goiter, otherwise known as Derbyshire Neck! Goiter, a lump in the neck occurs when the thyroid enlarges when iodine intake is chronically low, trying to make enough thyroxine. I wonder if this iodine has been stopped. If so, when?
I take standardised kelp 150ug Iodine [RDA] to help with adrenal fatigue. This hardly seems wrong if from a good source. If people just took half of this amount- that would useful, anyway.
Iodine does need Selenium to balance in the body and reduce risk of oversupply/absorpsion - so I make sure one or two Brazil nuts are in my morning muesli.
I think Iodine is more prevalent in Sea salt- so I use this also- but not in large amounts due to Blood Pressure considerations.
....ummmmmmmm thanks Spareribs......I have recently found out through an ASYRA test that I am Iodine deficient. Looking at the iodine rich foods I would say I have likely been deficient for a very long time, as they don't really figure in my diet. This may throw light on my daughter's (my youngest child) very low grade learning challenges.
Next experiment will be iodine for me...I will trial it and then try daughter on it too...her thyroid enlarges regularly....the GP even commented on it but still put her health issues down to anxiety and seemed to imply it was due to ME!!!!!!!! What a cheek! LOL!!!!
What an educational journey this All Things Thyroid' is!
So we underactive thyroid sufferers may be deficient in iodine but taking iodine (seeweed?) vitamins and kelp will give you too much. So how would you know exactly the correct dose. Does anyone know what you would need to take - i.e. fish, iodised salt if you can find it? to help with the thyroid condition please?
just increase it slightly until you have loose bowels
Milk, yoghurt and fish look pretty good - I confess I never drank milk and didn't eat much fish - but I do have them now.
Personally I don't think it's a good idea to take ANY supplements without first testing if you are low. I know they have iodized salt in most of Europe (Lidl 15p) and people eat a lot less salt now too, but I prefer a little seasalt in cooking.
The jury is still out on whether iodine helps those with existing Thyroid probs or not.
N.B. Levo also contains some iodine.
Just found this article was mentioned a few days ago....
