Hello, my name is Dana and im 22 years old.

My husband and I were trying to get pregnant for 8 months now and we were married for a year & a half, i wasn't using any protection like pills or so, just depending on the days of fertility, so after 8 months of trying my Gynecologist asked me to do the TSH test and it was 6.0, so he advised me to go to a Endocrinologist and he asked to do the TSH test again although that i did the blood test before one day and he prescribed for me the drug to have, so i did it BUT my TSH level was 3.5!!

is that normal to vary that much between 2 tests in 1 day difference??

or could 1 of the tests is wrong?

and should i keep on using the drug??

Please advise to know what to do!

Hi Dana, welcome to the site.

What time were the blood tests done? The TSH varies according to the time of day.

By 'drug', do yo mean Levothyroxine? It isn't a drug, it's a hormone and personally, I would say yes, keep taking it because both those readings are too high.

Hey Grey, thanks a lot sweetie!

i did the 1st blood test on Sat. the 4th of May @ 8.30 am, and the second was on Sun. the 5th of May @ 4.30 pm.

And yes, it's a hormone.. i wasn't aware of that until i saw your post and rechecked it.

Well, there you probably have the explanation for the the differences in the TSH reading. The TSH is at it's highest at early in the morning, so it's a good idea to always try to get it done as early as possible. Ranges wouldn't account for that big a difference, I don't think.

Anyway, you are hypo so, keep taking the tablets! lol

you were right about that Grey!

both were high as my dr. said and he told me to keep taking the tablets! hahaha

i was hoping that 1 of the labs were wrong so i won't take those tablets for the rest of my life, but it didnt work anyways

Dana, It is difficult to know without the reference ranges for both tests. Do you know if they used the same laboratory because different laboratories have different reference ranges. This may be a reason for the different TSH values. If your reference ranges are the same for both tests, then you should have your thyroid antibodies tested in case you have an autoimmune thyroid disease.

The fact that you are being treated with thyroid hormone is excellent and be happy that they caught it early as many GPs ignore a TSH below 10.

It would be advisable to request to have your thyroid antibodies tested if this hasn't already been done. The tests to ask for Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody (TPOAb) and Thyroglobulin Antibody (TgAb).

PS: You have definitely been diagnosed with hypothyroidism which is an underactive thyroid and you will be on thyroid hormone, ie levothyroxine or similar, for the rest of your life. I know it is something which you may find is difficult and scary to deal with but the positive is that once you start feeling better, you may be able to fall pregnant quicker. You are also protecting your baby by being treated with thyroid hormone.

Keep taking your thyroxine and let us know how you get on. xxx

i used different labs both times but the ranges are almost the same which are between .47 - 5.5

And thanks a lot for your explanation, it has been a comfort to know that and just to read it.. 'coz I've crying for that fact when my Dr. told me that i might take it for the rest of my life, but now to know that when i get pregnant insha' Allah it will be safe for my baby it made happy and i felt comfort..
