I have an app with Endo tomorrow and was having a look through my results and only took notice of Autoimm on my notes before but checked today what idiopathic meant and found out that it means a unknow disease??? .Has anyone else have this written on there notes or have any info about it.

Thanks, Karen

The disease is of unknown cause. Autoimmune means that you have developed antibodies against your own cells, in this case it is your thyroid cells. Some people have antibodies against their skin cells which could lead to psoriasis or cells in your joints which would be rheumatoid arthritis. Its a bummer

Something like 80% of hypothyroid cases in the UK seem to be due to autoimmune issues (basically, Hashimoto's). And some of the rest are idiopathic. That is where I am - hypothyroid, treated, but cause unknown.

I would like to know - but truth is, it would make very little real difference unless an alternative way of treating me also arrived. And I quite often think to myself, I would rather not know than have Hashimoto's with all the consequences that can have. I seem to knock back the levothyroxine and feel better. Really couldn't wish for better in that sense.

Find out how they know it is autoimmune. There should be antibodies if your body is attacking your thyroid. There are two antibody tests. Find out how far over range yours are. Sometimes leaky gut or permeability of the intestines causes autoimmune problems. Leaky gut arises from taking a lot of antibiotics or too much refined food which stresses digestion. You can heal leaky gut with a whole foods diet and relaxation techniques which increases blood flow to the gut. It seems that is one of the first places "stress" tends to target.

Sorry about that, it didn't appear to be processing for about ten minutes so I repeated the submit button.
