I am hypo and need adrenalin free injections at... - Thyroid UK
I am hypo and need adrenalin free injections at the dentist otherwise I feel faint and get palpitations. Can anyone tell me why please
My dentist knows that I am hypo but he has never mentioned these injections to me. I have been going through some gruelling treatment recently having an implant and each time I had to have injections it was sheer agony. I had to postpone some of my treatment because I could not take any more. I always come away from the dentist feeling really weird and need a full day to recover. Am due back in October for more torture, should I ask for adrenaline free injections? I too would welcome some further info on this issue.
Yes I would definitely ask for adrenalin free injections, it will make a big difference I'm sure
My new dentist gives me adrenalin free injections. I don't know if everyone needs them but I feel a whole lot better than when my previous dentist just gave me the usual type of injection presumably with adrenalin.
I don't opt for the adrenalin free injections, but I do take 5 mcg of cortisone before I go to the dentist and 5 after if it has been stressful. Before I took the HC, a visit to the dentist would shatter me for at least the following day.
Adrenalin makes you tired and wired and I suppose if you can't make enough cortisol to balance it, thats why you feel so rough. Normally you run on adrenalin only if you don't have enough cortisol so introducing it externally must be a shock to the body. People with hypo tend towards poor adrenal function as the adrenals are constantly working over time to help prop you up.

I can't believe I have heard this - I have had awful reactions to anaesthetics for years but never knew about this connection to the thyroid.
If I have the adrenaline, I will be paralysed from head to foot, able to hear but not speak.
After a long time (it seems) feeling comes back, starting at the toes. When it all returns, I shake uncontrollably and cannot stop sobbing.
About an hour later, I am recovered enough to walk and go home. Feel drained for the rest of the day, but no long term effects.
My present dentist knows not to give it to me, but usually puts me at the end of his list, just in case.
I have also had a very bad reaction to a GA - resulting in a month off work. GP thought it was the Nitrous Oxide, aka laughing gas.
Really makes me wonder what else is out there...
My dentist uses Citanest/Octapressin and there is no reaction whatsoever. The normal injections made me so ill - one dentist told me 'it's all in the mind". They don't know hypo can have severe reactions and we are left to get on with it. Usually anaesthetists take precautions. One injection took 3 months to recover once.
I always thought my son was allergic to the dental injection too, but when he went into hospital to have his tonsils removed, they asked if he was allergic to anything, I said he has a bad reaction to the medicine in the dental injection the surgeon said it wasn't the fact he was allergic to it, it was being injected into the wrong vein in his mouth (as the mouth has soo many ) Something she said the dentist would never admit too !!
I've been seeing my dentist for years and when he started giving me adrenalin free injections it made such a difference. I usually remind him just before he gives me an injection and on one occasion I forgot and he did as well, I had the usual symptoms, felt like I was going to faint and was very light headed for a couple of hours after so I am convinced that it is the adrenalin that makes me feel unwell.
This was the original novacaine but it takes a waiting period to work and takes longer to leave the system. The adrenaline saves time for the dentist who doesn't make money waiting to do his work on a patient.
