Just been told about a new treatment from Australia called fodmaps , it was mentioned in the
daily express newspaper and is in the HEALTHY FOOD GUIDE magazine out now
( november issue) from what I can see fodmaps stand for a list of basically" sugars" that aren"t
absorbed by the small intestine but are passed into the colon, where the gut bacteria try to break them down . They cause the bowel to distend by drawing in more fluid and rapidly generate gas when the bacteria start to ferment them.Diarrhoea can occur due to an osmotic effect that increases the amount of water in the colon.
Anyway they seem to be using this in New Zealand too, in the mag there is a list of foods to avoid and a list to stick with, it looks as if you start gradually to introduce the fodmaps one by one to see which is the culprit in your case.
but you do have to do it under supervision of a dietician.
just thought it interesting and I found it good to see what foods they say is IBS friendly
I was put on the low FODMAP diet 2 weeks ago, my symptoms have improved loads. Still finding it hard to remember what I can and can't eat. My life is now reading back of packets ,jars etc. Even Gluten free products have onion and garlic in which is a no no. Seems to work better when i make things from scratch. It was a shock that all my fruits and vegetables that I loved and ate loads of , i'm not allowed to have anymore, but have others to choose from. I'm glad I have been put on it as i am not in pain so much with the bloating etc x
Hi Loofus, sorry not to reply sooner, not been on the comp for a while, really pleased for you that it has helped I know what you mean having to read everything you want to eat , but sounds like you are going the right way , I have an appointment with a dietician through my doctor for the 28th of this month, I have been on gluten free wheat free foods ,trying to help myself, just had a letter from the dietician who tells me to stick to my normal meals all home made not proccessed, ( which is what I always had done ) and make sure I take time to eat whilst relaxed and says most people its not the food they eat its the way they eat !
In the end you just end up more stressed as to who to believe, but I will try anything.
good luck with your efforts x
Hi Loofus, certainly sounds like things are going quite well for you. I am waiting for an appointment with a dietician but the doctor I saw wasn't that helpful i.e. he didn't really want to refer me. I am going to the doctors again tomorrow, my normal doctor this time, and I will chase up the appointment as I'm now at the end of my tether, i've had IBS since 1996 and it's getting me down. Would you mind letting me know what fruit and vegetables you can't eat, I also eat loads of fruit and veg so could be making my symptons worse. It's all very well having IBS supplements but they are so expensive, I would rather do it with diet if at all possible.
I've been told I need to go on this diet but have to wait until feb to see a dietician!
I already dont eat any fruit or anything with lactose in as had previously been advised that it was the sugars I was reacting to. I am also very careful with veg which can be triggers too (some I never thought would be!). I have become a very slow eater unconsciously anyway since getting worse at the begining of this year and that really seems to help.
