I’m taking one a week atm but I’m still struggling to go They make me go but like I said my stools are like pebbles and after I’ve had one I go back to where I can’t go again . . . .i was told I had ibs 15 years ago the gp said it was stress of losing a parent but it was the other way around then I couldn’t stop going 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️but over the years my toilet habits so to speak have been normal untill afew months ago I feel full all the time but haven’t lost weight and have the urge to go but nothing happens . . . Electrolyte imbalance, not enough magnesium, too much salt. Plenty of water will only dilute electrolytes, if eating loads of fruit especially in to extent veg you get lots water already.

Thankyou for your reply I’ve recently had all my bloods done and gp said are fine due to having other health conditions how often can I take suppositories do you think this will help to get empty so to speak ? Xxx

You can still have electrolyte imbalance and have levels with range, thats why you have symptoms. You can take suppositories but how much water are you drinking and are you regularly getting the RDA of all essential minerals, your fitness deplete many things, I've had similiar.

I’m following this also- thanks for asking & I hope you find a better equilibrium so to speak xx

I’m not familiar with with electrolyte imbalance tbh I only drink water which I drink a pint in morning And lots threw out the day 4 of 750 ml of water and I have decaf coffee on a morning 😊xxx

I take a pair of suppositories every day and for over 30 years. GP prescribed, can't empty bowels otherwise. So I wouldn't worry about that aspect of your issues. Advise you see a colorectal consultant if not done so.

My gp saying they can’t get me in to see them I was told to see pharmacist so I went today details of what was said below Thankyou for reply 😊xxx

I can empathise because I've had IBS C for many years.

I've tried everything but the only things that seem to help are 2 kiwi fruits per day, ( they contain inulin which is beneficial for gut health) Alflorex probiotics (the chewy banana and strawberry ones), sprinkling magnesium citrate powder over my meals and ensuring that I get sufficient fluids throughout the day.

Thankyou as I’ve said below I went to my pharmacist this morning as gp can’t get me an appointment I’ve been trying for over a month to get to see someone 🤷‍♀️ I was getting abit concerned with it going on for so long but reading on here it’s seems quite a common thing for a lot of people The pharmacist stated it’s can take a while for my stools to return to ‘normal’I’m hoping with suppositories it will work it’s self out. I’m also going to try fybogel what these kind people on this forum as suggested it’s the been bloated and not feeling empty / or finished if you no what I mean that I don’t like I didn’t realise how uncomfortable I felt talking about this face to face I was quite embarrassed tbh I found it so much easier talking on here. So Thankyou 😊xxx

I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Only just seen your reply.

I know what you mean about feeling embarrassed re face to face discussions. I'm the same. This forum ( and others I am on) are safe, friendly places to vent and find support, aren't they? It's good to feel not alone, nor isolated.

How are you getting on with the Fybogel? I found it helped for a while and then I went back to feeling bloated again.

Good luck with the suppositories. Let us know how it goes. 🫂

suppositories are there to help and should not be dangerous. Sometimes we go through periods of constipation and could be due to stress.

Yvonneh1234 in reply toCarercmb

Thankyou for answering I just didn’t no how often I could take them for I spoke to the pharmacy this morning he seemed to think that even though I’m going with a suppository it’s not emptying me. Completely with been constipated for a long time he recommended that I have a suppository every other day untill bm are normal then to try fibogel to keep me going regular Fingers crossed this will work 🤞 I asked should I book in with gp but he said gp would just say the same as him 🤷‍♀️ I will see how things go Thankyou for your reply it’s really appreciated 😊xxx

I have ibs and have been dealing with constipation after a Zoledrolic acid infusion and have used Fibogel which has helped keep me going.

Trec profile image

Interesting to see that the Alendronic infusion caused constipation. I had horrendous diarrhoea after taking weekly Alendronic acid tablets for 4 weeks, though it started but being given Senna in hospital, followed by the tablets and never stopped until I was hospitalised with Colitis. I have IBS, labelled C but more mixed. At the GP”s urging I have tried the tablets again but although the diarrhoea is not severe now and short lived the abdominal pain is dreadful for days and I cannot eat. I was considering asking if I’m like try the annual infusion although the alternative I have been offered is Prolia.

Calmlake in reply toTrec

Everyone is different and it is so hard with ibs and medication but i had constipation and bloating with the Alendrolic acid tablets and constipation bloating and some pain with the Zoledrolic acid infusion which I had 4 months ago. (First one)I am now waiting for it to wear off.

It is so difficult when you are trying to do the best for your bones.

Oh dear, that doesn’t sound promising. I hope you feel better soon. I’ve read here that drinking lots of water before the injection is helpful but don’t know if that refers to constipation or generally feeling unwell. I have to take a 4th AA tablet tomorrow but still feel rough after last week’s so might call it a day before attempting it. So hard to see my GP though. Best wishes.

I would consider the infusion. Your bones are very important. You could be ok with it. It's just been my experience. All the best.

I’ve been taking two Prolia injections a year, for over ten years with no problem . I can’t see why it comes into a bowel conversation,I thought it was for bones. Please correct me if I’ve taken that wrong.

Prolia wasn’t mentioned just Alendronic Acid which, although also prescribed for Osteoporosis, can cause some dreadful intestinal reactions for some people. I was hospitalised after the tablets caused Colitis.

Country_Bumpkin87 profile image
Country_Bumpkin87 in reply toCalmlake

How & why was this prescribed if you don’t mind my asking

Love c xx

Calmlake profile image
Calmlake in reply toCountry_Bumpkin87

It was prescribed for osteoporosis because I couldn't tolerate the alendrolic acid tablets.

My younger sis already osteoporotic I am still on another decade the last year, just increased osteopenia

Will remember not everyone tolerates initial meds well xx

Have you trierd #Fy[bogel? Ispaghula husk softens and increrases the volume of stools so that the colon can move them through more easily. I take one after breakfast and one after dinner. \It takes a few days to work, but it helps my constipation a lot. I no longer have to use glycerol suppositories

I will try this Thankyou for your advice do you just by it from the pharmacy? Xxx

richard_jw profile image

You can buy it in any UK pharmacy, and I think in other countries like the US as well

hope it helps. Make sure you drink enough water when you take it

I have had IBS for years. It was diarrhoea but just lately constipation.

I have tried everything. The only thing that works for me is Syrup of Figs which you have buy and it is expensive. At the moment it works but no doubt it will stop working after a little while.

I also use Glycerin suppositories that I put into the rectum every now and then and it does clear me out.Its worth a try.

Have you tried cascara sagrada? It retrains the bowel to work properly and is not habit forming.

Many medications constipate. If you are taking pain meds for constipation you only make it worse.

Try taking some stool softeners with the pain meds. Better yet ask your doctor for his advice as he knows all your medical info.

Hi. I had IBS constipation issues for a long time. The Consultant recommend a Dietician that has a special interest in those with IBS and other associated gut issues. After submitting full details of current food and fluid take I upped my fibre and fluid intake and changed few things like having oat based cereal with flax. Worked well for me but had to reduce/ remove fybolgel as found it was too much. So now just on one Laxido a day. Should be able to stick with that long term. Just need to have blood test in a few weeks to check for any electrolyte imbalance. It's finding the right dietician for you so I'd suggest get a recommended one from a gastroenterologist I'd you can

Yvonneh1234 profile image
Yvonneh1234 in reply toDavid_H

Thankyou for your reply the gp doesn’t want to no tbh waited 3 weeks for an appointment to give me the same what I brought over the counter 🤷‍♀️ xxxxx

David_H profile image
David_H in reply toYvonneh1234

That's a real shame. For me the diet changes set me off on the right path so if you cant get to see a ibs focused dietician perhaps search the Web for appropriate diet sites?

I m trying not to be dependent on anything the only thing what seems to get me go for afew day is taking a suppository Xxxx
