Hi Pipken, Interesting that you find liquorice helpful. I don't know where in the World you are, but if you are in the UK, please be aware that most liquorice here contains wheat. The Danish stuff mostly doesn't, but is expensive and can be an acquired taste.
hi l just buy liquorice all sorts.or any liquorice based sweets .seems to work for me .and feel a lot better than l used too.used to be quite ill when l was bloated with wind and felt sick .and spent most days on the loo .as l throught its working for me ,
.somebody else might give it a try.but only take one sweet a day .
Here are the contents of a randomly selected Sainsbury's liquorice all sorts. They are not gluten free. INGREDIENTS:Sugar, Treacle, Fortified Wheat Flour (wheat flour, Calcium Carbonate, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Glucose Syrup, Desiccated Coconut, Palm Oil, Beef Gelatine, Maize Starch, Humectant:Glycerol; Colour:Plain Caramel, Curcumin, Beetroot Red, Capsanthin; Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Liquorice Extract, Flavourings, Sunflower Oil, Coconut Oil, Water, Spirulina Concentrate, Glazing Agent:Carnauba Wax, Beeswax; Fruit And Vegetable Concentrates:Black Carrot, Blackcurrant Concentrate. xjrs also has a fair point ref glycyrrhizin. I love liquorice, but can't eat the UK stuff because it contains wheat. The Danish stuff is often salted, and is very much an acquired taste.
most things like bread and pastry's l can't eat even milk which l love . and cauliflower cheese which l love just don't agree with me.gluten free stuff seems to work and feel much better .l only had to eat a sandwich with normal bread and l would throw up.done all the tests via doctor and we ruled out everything else . so now l can control what l eat and got more of a life than l did before
I used to like those liquorice sweets which are rather like caramels, and individually wrapped. I haven't bought any for a very long time, but they tasted very nice, very liquorice-y and made your tongue black!
I don't know if those would have gluten in them? Maybe not, but possibly, but it doesn't matter if you aren't actually coeliac. A tiny bit of gluten like that would most likely not bother you.
I was thinking of a different sweet, but yes, I do remember blackjacks. When I was a kid they were 4 for a penny, and I used to buy some with my tuppence treat money on Tuesdays!
Yes! It can be an issue even without pre-existing hypertension. My blood pressure crept up over seven days or so, by just using one herbal teabag daily (that contained licorice)! It then took another seven days or so to settle. It has more potential to cause a problem with increasing age and being female apparently.
Hi I am gluten free too and yes liquorice does contain gluten as someone previously said. Liquorice lines the stomach, is in some supplements for ibs this is why you are getting relief. Try going without the liquorice and see if you feel even better. And please look out for processed food too in the free from aisle. It is not great for those of us with gluten sensitivity.
