Hi Everyone, I'm thinking about processing trauma that results in physical symptoms using psychotherapy. Have any of you had experience with it? I've already done counseling (only talking) and it didn't help. Thanks!!

Have any of you gone through psychotherapy?
Hi, I had a lot of physical issues after a traumatic incident (digestive issues, repressed immune system, insomnia etc). I initially had Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as that was the recommended treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. However, it didn't really work for me. I eventually saw a Psychotherapist, and it was the best thing that I've done. My psychotherapist used various techniques, and was also trained in hypnotherapy, and it worked really well for me.
The majority of my physical symptoms were resolved, apart from my IBS, but even that has eased considerably with the hypnotherapy. I can highly recommend psychotherapy - make sure that a Psychotherapist is registered (the BACP website will have a list). Hope everything goes well.
hi
Yes I have had many years of psychotherapy and I have found it very helpful in many ways but not unfortunately for my IBS. My trauma from childhood was very severe and long term , though, and I was very dissociated from my body for most of my life.
We are all different and it’s good that angelwings has had good results. I feel that therapy can help a lot with trauma but you would need to discuss your situation and expectations with an experienced professional.
I can highly recommend psychotherapy. Whether it helps IBS or not, it's a really good thing to do and helps to guard against mental illnesses like depression.
Hi, there are different types of therapy or counselling that is available, it's not one size fits all unfortunately. The main thing is not to give up as there will be people out there who have the knowledge and experience to help you. When looking for someone whether it's counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy etc., look for a person who has qualifications in PTSD as one of there specialisms, somebody who works with trauma and read any online reviews.
Weigh up the right options for you. If you go down the NHS route the waiting list will be long and more than likely you will be asked to attend group therapy first, which isn't for everyone.
If you go down the private route the cost might seem high but I'm of the opinion that you can't put a price on good health.
If you don't give up you will find the right person to help you. I wish you well in you search and all the best for the future.
