I avoid taking medication full stop. However as we all know that having IBS is a moving feast! If I did have to take any medication, I would try both to see what works best. We are all different and therefore only by trying out a particular medication will we know what works best for us. I also know that what works one week, may not work the next! The joys of IBS!
If this is for reflux and your is bad I would take Gaviscon advance. An ent consultant about 5 years ago told me to take gaviscon advance (not the regular gaviscon) as I had what is known as 'silent reflux' and ir really did help. Doubt it will be on prescription but you could ask? Cost is around £10 for a large bottle or you buy the chewy things but I used the aniseed flavour liquid in the bottle and was told to take it initially 3 times a day and last dose after cleaning teeth but before bed. As it got better, I ended up just taking it at night only and then I stopped it.
Sorry of your reason for taking these meds is not reflux! By the way I also have IBS and IBD (patchy pancolitis).
I found Gaviscon Advanced some help but not enough if, say, I wanted to do some gardening and was bending down a lot. The GP gave me a prescription for Lansoprazole which works like a dream. No acid reflux pain at all now and I have found I can reduce the amount I take and then just go back to the full dose when I need to.
Take note of the following. Acidex (a generic Indian product) contains parabens which Gaviscon does not. Parabens are well on their way to becoming banned substances and appear n the EC list under REACH regulations. This is a list of 241 Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) the list is mirroed by our own UK H&S Executive, and the California 64 proposals.
