hi, I’m new here and this is my first post( spend a lot of time on fibro & auto immune site!)

I’m having an awful time of it bowel wise atm… and for som 24 months or more but so much so that I’ve actually paid and seen a private colorectal surgeon( female)

I have this weird awful sensation of constantly( or nearly always) wanting to ‘go’. I have to use suppositories and the use an anal douche to clear out what I just can’t do naturally. It’s been just awful and stops me going anywhere far from loo & sink facilities.

I’ve seen a bowel specialist nurse and she was the one who referred me for colonoscopy and advised seeing surgeon as she knew from attempted examination something was up( or down!)

Eventually had colonoscopy after a clear FIT test and Gp expiadated several times. All ok. Just two small benign polyps. So bit the bullet and paid to see a surgeon. Worth every penny. Said it was possible it could be any of the above in the listed title of my post.

I also have interstitial cystitis and she was surprised I’d not yet seen a physio regarding this alone as the bowel problems are often connected.

she has referred me for an protogram, transit study and an endoanal ultrasound to see if it’s an intusssception( all on NHS) these tests sound absolutely awful but I’m at the end of my tether and really need to get to the bottom( excuse the pun!) before I go completely off eating forever. I’m nauseous a lot of the time and obviously worrying doesn’t help😢

sorry for such a long winded- no pun intended again- but ANYONE had any of these symptoms/ tests?

thanks for reading if you got this far. I’ve suffered too long to do nothing and reach out. X

Hi Beaky, what an awful time you're having! I had a rectocele repaired a few years ago and have recently had an anal manometry and endo anal scan. All is ok but pelvic floor dysfunction is diagnosed. I take a sachet of Movicol every night which prevents constipation - but the IBS I've suffered from for the past 30 years complicates the whole thing. Flare ups cause this feeling of wanting to go all the time and I end up with piles which creates a vicious circle of pain and hypersensitivity. All the very best to you xxxx

Hi Binks, sorry for late reply. Been battling various other issues along side the ongoing bowel issues!

I to take movicol but it can cause my ibs to flare and also cause nausea( something I’m suffering a lot from)

Was the scan painful? I hope they can do something for the dysfunction.

I shall let you know the outcome of tests… if I ever get them done. Seem to have to wait an age for things these days! I too have piles🤦🏻‍♀️x

Hi BB, The scans aren't painful for normal people 😆. But my muscles are so tight it took them quite a while to get the scope in and so I can't pretend it didn't hurt. Nothing like as bad as the endoscopy - I've had a few in the past 30 years and never as awful as this last one! I don't like to write negatively about tests on here because it adds to anxiety.

The two anal scans would be absolutely fine for most people! Waiting for the tests makes me so anxious I will do anything to avoid them - then there's the terror of the results 😢xx

I've had chronic constipation for years and bouts of tenesmus (feeling want to empty bowels but cañt). Yes, I've had those tests and just mildly uncomfortable - it's difficult I know but try not to worry about them. My tenesmus bouts caused by internal rectal prolapses caused probably by constipation. Constipation eased by using suppositories and NOT eating lots of fibre and no herbal laxatives like Fybogel. Hope you get resolution soon.

So are you saying you avoid fibre& senna? I find movicol makes my ibs worse.

I’m sorry you have/ had prolapsed internally- that’s one of my possible diagnoses… did you have surgery to correct?

All the best to you. Thanks for reply. X

A very good book about the bowel that I read explains how herbal fibres make stool too soft to push , instead one needs more bulk. Also, constant use of herbal fibres can be damaging. General advice to eat more fibre can be counter productive, despite what I've been told over the years! The advice in the book is, if necessary, to use glycerol suppositories - I use two a day. If/when one does need an occasional laxative then a gentle one like Milk of Magnesia is better. Having tried this advice, it works for memuch better than the high-fibre diet I was on.

I THINK that Senna is herbal, don't know about Movicol.

I would advise not making sudden diet changes.

My rectal prolapses were treated by "banding", a quick and pretty painless procedure.

Good luck!

Hi, been told I have a rectal prolapse. Would be interested in reading the book you mentioned. Also did you have the banding on the nhs? Good luck and thank you.

The book is "The Bowel Book" by Michael Levitt. Helped me enormously. He's written at least one other book on same topic but I've not read that.

I've had banding done both on the NHS and privately.

Thanks very much, will have a look for it. Seeing the doctor in a couple of weeks so will ask about banding.

I have all these problems and all these tests(proctogram is painless). Problem now is surgeon won't do anything about it and says surgery could make things worse. I've just been left in constant pain with no hope. Don't know wher to turn

Goddess, that sounds awful. Why do they do all these tests and then not proceed to rectify your problem(s)

I’m so sorry you feel so abandoned. If and when I finally get some answers I shall reply with my outcome. Don’t lose hope. X

Hi. I have had most of those tests etc over the years and at present I am under a private consultant who has set my mind at rest there is nothing sinister going on! Reassures me but it does not help with the constant and never ending problems especially when I am going out or in a strange environment. Please ask me anything you want either in here or on my email ianpithers@ yahoo.co.uk

Did you have a transit study involving taking 2 radio opaque caps for 3 consecutive days starting 6 days before all the other tests on the same day?

Did you manage to ‘go’ without laxatives etc for the 6 days prior?

I’m anxious as to how they can possibly do anorectal scan if my rectum is full.

I won’t be able to eat as if I don’t go twice a day( with high fibre diet, laxatives, suppositories and douches) I end up with severe nausea and abdo pain.

I’m also expected to swallow barium at some stage of these tests.

Whilst I appreciate the need for them, and I guess convenience of having all tests done in one go… it is just freaking me out as I will end up like a exploding bloated goat!

I’m gonna ring the X-ray dept tomorrow.

Sorry to bombard you with so many questions! I appreciate your awaited reply. Many thanks
