on going impaction round 3!

I have slow transit bowel since my 20's ( now over 60) with several impactions over the years. Since September I have been to A&E on three occasions and xrays confirmed loaded bowel which I just dont seem to have cleared after various suggested doses of laxido etc.

Laxido actually makes me very ill hate the stuff but last week in so much pain GP advised high dose again to clear my bowel to give me some relief until specialist appointment in March.

I have had 19 satchets over 7 days and yes gone loads , very uncomfortable unable to leave the house ( which hasnt helped as chipped my front tooth and also in pain with this but cant attend a dentist until toilet business subsided ) but have absolutely no idea if I have cleared my bowel or not .

Ive gone through this three times now and at my lowest ebb just dont seem to have a life any more and dont know what to do

Hi. I am so sorry to hear about your situation and as a IBS sufferer myself, I know thing aren't easy! Although I have never had the symptoms you describe, I do have flare ups and I am often at the end of my tether!

Having said that, what I do know given time, is that things will get better for me! I understand that your not able to leave the house at present but is there any form of exercise that you can do indoors that will help with bowl movement?

I think if I was in your position I would be quite anxious and stressed about everything that is going on. If that is the case, I would be looking to do things I really enjoy every day that would ease the stress and anxiety!

Find things that will make you happy and give you pleasure. It is possible to find happiness in the smallest of things, such as responding to someone who needs help on this network.

Remember you are not alone and we are here to help.

Take care. x

Thanks for that. I have been trying to do things I like to do but total exhaustion from lack of sleep prevents this. Trying my best to work on it. Going to NHS means months of waiting so no point.

Having experienced faecal impaction, I know how awful this is. From what I've read and experienced, herbal laxatives can make things worse, salts or milk of magnesia are what's more effective. But get professional advice, don't take my word for it. One of my instances of impaction was when I was in hospital and had wrongly been given daily fybogel for my constipation. It took 3 enemas to sort that out. More and more fibre is often the wrong way to go, despite what a lot of GPs prescribe for constipation. BUT don't make sudden diet changes and, if possible get professional help. Sorry, this all sounds a bit dogmatic, whatever you do, do hope you get some resolution soon.

Hi ,sorry to hear your plight and shocked that all your GP can prescribe is Laxido. There are other medications such as Prucalopride that actually helps motility that could be worth trying since this is a chronic problem. Maybe you need a gastroenterologist referral if you have not already.

Prebiotics also like ginger are supposed to help. What I do find helpful is Symprove in the morning, and a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in a small glass of ginger cordial at night. Some people recommend a hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning to get things going. Also I used to have ground or milled linseeds or flaxseeds on my cereal before I started having Symprove. Anyway if you are continuing with Laxido ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Best wishes and push your specialist for more help, not long now till March!

So sorry to hear this. My life is the same . I can not arrange anything due to this awful feeling of sickness. I go through every motion in one day. Constipation, diarreah. Normal. This is due to all the different medication I take. I have decided to stop all medication to give bowel rest. Let's see what happens?
