amitriptylline and IBS
go for it. It’s fine
I was on 10mg for a couple of years and symptoms came back Dr increased it to 20mg and Ive been ok since.
best thing I ever did buy was on 25 for about 20 years now on 35. I’ve tried lots of time coming off it but just can’t all the problems start. It’s only now I get constipation problems but I think that’s due to other problems. Definitely up the dosage slowly till you get to right amount for you. My gp said for it to really work should take 50 but I never want to be on the much but if you do it’s fine. Good luck I also started taking 10 in the morning and 25 in the night but that’s because of bladder problems
I’m already on 50mg and it doesn’t really help me but everyone is different so worth a try. I have found peppermint tablets do help with the bloating and gaseous tummy. My ibs is mostly under control apart from when I get stressed.
same story here i started on 10mg and was bumped up to 20mg after about a year. But that dose has been a life saver for me as i seemed to spend all my waking life in the toilet with diarrhoea. My body would ache with it and i was scared to leave the house. I still have flare ups but its much more manageable.
I was on 10mg daily for just nearly 2 years. Still had a couple of mild flare ups in the first few months but then stabilised. Had mimor side effect of dry throat. Started taking Symprove 6 months after taking Amitriptyline. That improved my bowel movements. After 1+ years on amitriptyline and with GP's approval, I gradually weaned off as haven't had flare ups for some time as I manage via diet and stress reduction techniques. Also stopped Symprove a couple of months ago.
My doctor prescribed Nortriptyline which is similar to Amytriptyline six months ago. I take 10mg one day and 20mg the next. It has been a miracle medicine for me after having IBS symptoms for six years. It feels like my gut brain just started to relax and told my brain to do the same. Now I eat a ‘mostly’ sensible normal diet with gluten and fibre and dairy. From the other comments it sounds like I might have to increase the dose in a few years but at 75 I don’t think it will be a problem. But first I will try weaning myself off in another six months to see what the reaction is as maybe my gut will have retrained itself. Good luck to everyone.
