Hi … from reading on here I know that some people are IBS -M so have both diarrhoea and constipation and switch between the two. I just wonder how people manage this as the usual strategies for one of therese symptoms would likely make the other one worse ?
I am having mixed bowel movement a each week at the moment but am struggling to know how to manage it … any advice would be great

Hi. With having has IBS for over six years now l have come to accept that my bowel movements are different every day. There is no rhyme or reason why it is like this as l can eat the same meal two days running and my bowel movements will be different. I do try to eat a variety of different fibre so that my experiences of having diarrhoea are few and far between. I also recognise that my stress levels vary from day to day and this could be one of the main factors in how my bowel movements are.
Try not to get up in the situation, accept it for what it is and move on. Easier said than done but rest assured you are not alone.
Maybe you eat something that you can tolerate in small amounts. So you are OK the first day but not the second day. I would try not to eat the same thing two days in a row. See if you still react eating it once a week.
I do occasionally have short bouts of constipation. I have mainly IBS D, but it has to have some "mixed" there going on for that to happen.
I manage it by being very aware of what my body needs to eat, absolutely from one day to the next. Like balancing on a tightrope. If I'm too loose, I adjust and eat more "binding" foods. If I'm normal, I can eat a lot more variation of foods within certain limits, and if I am constipated that kind of gives me freedom to eat more fibre rich foods for a few days.
Basically, my diet completely depends on what my bm's were like that morning! Yes, I never used to have to live like that but now I do and have adapted to it.
I don't take any medication. I just handle it with diet which so far does help. I find it easier to remedy the couple of constipated days occasionally, than to firm up my bowel movements to normal generally. (Unless my IBS just "flips" of its own accord, which happens, back to being apparently normal again for "X" amount of time, overseen by the "gods" rather than anything I could do to control it!!)
I have either been 'D' or 'C' (currently 'C'). However, one thing to consider with mixed type is whether your 'D' might actually be overflow diarrhoea from the 'C'. This is where liquid food gets backed up behind impacted stool and seeps around it. In those cases, it is the 'C' that needs working on, which should then stop the 'D'. Just a thought.
Hi, As someone who has IBS ( mixed) it's really difficult at times to balance. I tend to use elimination, what foods are good or bad . Also when I have a bout of constipation I use fybogel mebeverine it really helps to get my bowel movements on a even keel . I do recommend going for walks ,even if it is for only 10 minutes. I walk at least once a day .
