Bad wind

hi I have started taking some probiotics I got from Holland and Barrett I thought they might help with my urgency and incomplete evacuation. The last week I’ve been getting loads of really smelly flatulence and really loose stools I’m just wondering if the pills could be causing this or am I just having an ibs flair up. I’m gluten free and don’t eat a lot of dairy which has helped but this is something new. Any advice very welcome thank you.

Hiya

Sounds like familiar IBS symptoms to me, usually come with a flare up. Sometimes, if you're trying probiotics for the first time, it might take a week or so to get used to them. If it says take two, just take one to start with. Mine say to take two but I never do, one seems to be enough. It might be an idea to try a different one, don't know how many strains you've got in your Holland and Barrett one, but mine have 15 strains in and contain Inulin. All I can say is, I can't live without my probiotics but its taken years to find one that suits me. I've tried dozens .

I get the smelly wind and when I do, I know I'm in for a few days of feeling rotten. I gave up any foods that I thought maybe causing it years ago, but a lot of the time with me, it's anxiety. Hope you feel better soon .🙂

Thank you I stopped taking them a couple of days ago but it’s not made any difference so I don’t think they are causing it. Will keep trying.

Possibly a flare up to be honest. If you have had flare ups before you should be able to gage how long it may go on. The obvious for bad wind like Buscopan will help with that side; according to a wind and bloating sheet I downloaded from one of the NHS trusts (wind and bloating IBS from Royal Berkshire trust) they suggest trying a probiotic for 4 weeks and monitor symptoms. If the effect is low, to then try another type. I only take the Actimel yoghurt drink but individual differences in us means what helps one may not help another! I hope it settles soon for you.

Try Alflorex probiotics. I have found they help me a lot. I had to take them for a couple of months before I really felt the benefits.
