I saw physio at the hospital this week. I have suffered for 5 years with my stomach. Had 2 colonoscopies, I was diagnosed with some diverticulitis. IBS C and sometimes D I have small rectocele and hiatis hernia.i have found over the years that most meds prescribed for me play havoc with my stomach. The physio who I saw prescribed me glycerol suppositories. I used one the day after and for days I have had bad flare up of IBS, mainly bad diarohhea. I have eaten very little. Had stomach ache. I am hoping it will soon settle down. I am very tired. I am now going to steer away from use of suppositories. I wondered if anyone else had suffered with this after use of suppositories

Hello jetwill, I am sorry you have had all this for 5 years ongoing. I have to be very careful with medications too but I've always been very sensitive to drugs of any kind. I now don't even trust taking a painkiller if I have any pain anywhere, so I understand.

But I wonder if your terrible flare up after trying a glycerol suppository might have been caused by a lot of 'back up' in the gut being cleared out? If you have IBS C that could happen over time. If you have bouts of D occasionally, maybe that was overflow diarrhea at those times?

There can still be a build up of stool when overflow diarrhea happens. Just wondering...

On the odd occasion I get a short bout of constipation though I mostly. have the D version of IBS. It is never too bad and lasts max. 3 days or so. At times like that I might need a glycerol suppository. And I've always found them to be pretty gentle except for the one time I inserted one that I forgot to dampen first. I had such a sore bum from making that mistake.

They work for me very gently and well and have never caused a bad flare up of the D.

So I don't know. But obviously if something makes you feel terrible, it's best you stay away from it?

Thankyou for that. Feel bit better that I can share. You are probably right. I have been much better today although tired. The physio wanted me to use them daily big I can't do that. I am like you very sensitive to a lot of medications. Although I think some GP don't recognise that. Thankyou for sharing.

I've decided you are probably both correct. Can't speak to physio she was part of consultants team. Will be sending me further appoint though. I've decided. I will use them again but not daily. I feel much better now but I did feel really exhausted. I still work a few hours. Don't want to give that up so I thought I would use maybe once or twice a week. See how I go. I've just taken a little psyllium powder which she asked me to do. I'm going to try and get more fibre into my diet with veg etc. I'm 71 years old and appetite not as good as it was. But going to make effort. Thankyou so much for your advice I do appreciate it and I'm not giving up on glycerol just not as often.
