gastric emptying test

hello everyone, I continue to struggle with my symptoms and recently underwent a gastric emptying stomach. The results are just in so I wanted to ask for peoples opinion as talking points with my doctor. The results at 24 and at 48 hours do deviate from the norm. At 24 hours, 0% of the food is in the ascending colon, 72.7 is in the transverse colon, 27.3% is in the descending colon, and 0% is in the rectosigmoid, with a colonic geometric center of 1.27 (normal 1.8-4.2)

At 48 hours, 23.3% is in the ascending colon, 54.5% in the transverse colon, 14.9 is in the descending colon, and 1.2% in the rectosigmoid, and 6.1% in stool, with a colonic geometric center of 1.1 (normal: 2.6-5.0)

any comments or observations on these results I can discuss with my G.I. doctor would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

what gastric emptying study did you have done most usually only test for gastroparesis so it looks at digestion of food over 4 hours ie how long it takes to leave the stomach performed via nuclear medicine……I’ve never heard of one where they study you over 48 hours…..did you just stay in hospital for that test? What was it called?

hello,I had the gastric emptying test at the nuclear medicine department for 48 hours. I was given some eggs and toast, xrayed, and then a turkey sandwich with further X-rays over the next couple of days. Their report was food was in the transverse colon too long and that kind of explains the constant pain I’m in just below the belly button. But I doesn’t explain the 7-10 daily bowel movements of mushy stool containing the food I ate the day before. And trust me it’s tiny amounts of food. So I’m not convinced the findings were just due to the food being stuck behind all the other stool that builds up and comes out like loose mud. That appears to be more rapid transit than slow or maybe I have both. It’s miserable and unrelenting and it doesn’t matter if I eat or just have liquid food.

have you been offered any treatment? Sorry to hear that the test wasn’t helpful. Has your gastro provided any hope for further tests or treatment?

they said to go a daily laxative routine which doesnt seem the correct course of action. I am doing further BAM testing and have some pancreatic enzymes. And I’m due in hospital for intravenous feeding because of my severe weight loss. Grim
