Hi all,

I was diagnosed with IBS in 2021. I have just been to the loo and noticed blood in my stools and I am extremely concerned and nervous after goofling what that could mean. Has anyone experienced the same. Any replies would be appreciated thanks.

I had exactly the same thing back in October. GP sent me for a colonoscopy. All was well. Best get checked out to be safe but likely to be nothing serious. Get it sorted then you can move on. Best wishes.

This is only from what I have heard and read, but I think that there are lots of different reasons for having blood in stools, not only the "worst case" scenario. I think it happens to a few people with IBS. But it's always sensible to get it checked out.

I am going to adopt the term 'Goofling'. Very apt. I hope all is well.

ne too. Get a colonoscopy arranged to make certain.

It may be related to a fissure or piles. Best to get it checked out if it continues. General advice from the NHS on this here:

hi, I had the same thing, I was sent for a bowl ct scan as a colonoscopy was unsuccessful and nothing was found. They told me it could be due to straining when opening bowls. Please don’t worry, I made myself ill worrying about it. Getting it checked will give you so much peace of mind. Good luck!

Hi This has happened to me before on a few occasions.

If the stools have a stripe looking blood affect then that is due to the anus being tight because your stools are hard and big to fit through when you need the toilet. What happens is that your straining the stools out and it is actually making small tear in the anus area. If there's a bit of blood in the toilet after you've been then on experience I think that is due to the small tear in the area.

This will heal over time but maybe abit sore.

What you have to be careful of though is that you don't strain too much more because that may cause other things.

To help with the straining it's advisable to drink a fair bit of water in the day and perhaps a laxative to help soften the stools so it is more easier to go to the toilet.

If the bleeding continues then seek help from your GP and perhaps have a colonoscopy to see if there is anything.

But with the experience I have had I don't think you have anything to worry about. I hope this helps.

See GI specialist. Get a colonoscopy. Make sure it is all good. Blood can be from a number of things and most are not always what you find as worst case on Google. I just had the same scenario where stoll testing came back with markers for blood and not like a little but off the scale. Did the coloscopy Friday with an endoscopy also. Lost 5 lbs... Gained it all back sat and sun eating like a pig in celebration of nothing remarkable on the tests.

Def see your Dr for any bleeding.

If it is red, it is from the lower part of the tract and is more likely to be an anal fissure or hemorrhoids. Get it checked out, but I would not worry too much. If the blood is black it is from further up on the tract.
