It's pretty high on the FODMAP list as a must to avoid. Thank goodness it doesn't bother me. It's probably my favorite veggie.
So far, oddly I have been okay with asparagus. I usually have about three spears about 9" long each. BUT...I cut the stalks into pieces, and peel them! The top bit I don't peel, but the thicker bits I do. No problem with it usually after doing that. So about 90% of the time asparagus is on my "green" list. It wasn't before I worked out that I had to peel it.
I have been told to eat just the tips and maybe an inch of the spear, but not the lower part of the spear.
Whilst there are no hard and fastrules as such, and no two people seem to be the same for IBS triggers, guidelines are that asparagus is a high fodmap food...clearly it doesn't agree with you.Avoid,or eat at your peril.Among other things,IBS means avoiding trigger foods, regardless of how much you love it,or suffer the consequences, fairly simple really.
And as others have pointed out selections of the parts eaten works for them, reminiscent of broccoli florets but not stalks...
Thanks for the warning. I have been ok with 3 spears but yesterday finished the tin, 5 spears and quite a lot of bread.....was blaming the bread for todays upsets.
