Endoscopy booked in

Had a phone call from the hospital today to book me in for the scope. I'm booked in for next Thursday. I'm very nervous of what they might find but happy that I'm finally getting seen to after a long wait. I just hope that it's nothing bad and they can fix me.

I've had two endoscopies, both unsedated. Nothing to worry about mate, over in 5 minutes. You'll be in good hands. Hospital staff are usually very supportive.

Thanks corpgov10, I'm just praying everything is going to be alright and the outcome isn't going to be as bad as my brain is telling me.

Thank you for you're reply.

Wow not my experience, I had sedation an still aware of the tube down the throat, I’m sorry but I found it very traumatic!

I've always focused on my breathing and have good breathing strategies. That's the tip

I had exactly the same last month. It wasnt half as bad as I had expected. The staff are very kind. Mine results came back fine. You will be ok, the worry is worse than the procedure. Best wishes.

I would advise you to have the sedation from past experience. My hubby has the procedure every 2 years but always has sedation he goes now with no anxiety at all.

The preparation is the worst bit. I felt awful and struggled to get there. Try not to go alone. 1st time without sedation I do Not recommend, but 2nd time with sedation was no problem at all.

Hi edgar77,

What preparation do you have to do? I had to do moviprep for my colonoscopy which was terrible, hopefully it's nothing like that.

Thank you for you're reply.

Hi dollymae06,

I might take that in to consideration, I will see how I feel on the day. Its more the worry about whats going on in my body and what they might find. That is what's causing my anxiety.

Thank you for you're reply.

Hi meadfoot,Yes the worry of what they might find is getting to me the most. It's horrible when you're mind is racing with all sorts of nasty things.

Thank you for you're reply.

I found they gave me an idea of what was wrong striaght after the test. Obviously any biopsies taken is the big waiting game. Good luck.

I had the same and was terrified, it seems so unnatural, but I just got myself something nice and relaxing to think about and let them get on with it and it was over in no time

Hi sabbygirl,

I will try and block the nasty thoughts out of my mind whilst having the procedure. Hard thing to do though I guess.

Thank you for you're reply.

I had one in February and it was over in no time. I was told i had very mild diverticulitis, no treatment unless it plays up, which it has'nt. I have ibs for last 18 years so its not too unlike what i already have. Im sure it will all go just fine for you, no point in saying dont worry, we all do, if we are honest, before even this minor procedure, but wishing you well on the day. 👍

Hi nanabud8,

It's awful that you have diverticulitis but at the same time it's good that you know what your dealing with and like you say its only mild, I bet that was a massive weight off you're shoulders. Hopefully it's the same scenario for me.

Thank you for you're reply

I had a long wait (by which time I'd moved!) I was nervous with the procedure itself, but the staff were welcoming and reassuring. You're a step closer to answers. Good luck

Macca1utd in reply to Gastromania

Hi gastromania,

Yes I've waited quite a while to get my appointment, I've been back and to from the doctors for a good few months pushing for it and now I've finally got somewhere. Hopefully now I can get anwsers but the worry is an answer I might not like.

Thank you for you're reply

The worst part is the anticipatory anxiety.

I've had a bunch of them, and now almost look forward to them. Weird, I know, but it is kind of nice to get all cleaned out, get a clean bill of health (which is almost always the case), and spend a day just doing absolutely nothing recovering.

Macca1utd profile image
Macca1utd in reply to winfong

Hi winfong,

Yes it most definitely is! That's the worst for me. The anxiety makes everything a 1000% worst. I just hope it's nothing to serious and I can manage what ever it is.

Thank you for you're reply

I suggest that you request a Barium Swallow that accomplishes much of what the endoscopy does and is a great first measure.

Hi John Jerry,

I will look in to that barium swallow, I've never heard of it.

Thank you for you're reply

I had a barium swallow once when I was 18. It was no trouble at all. The worst bit was fasting and travelling there with my Mum. I was so hungry everything tasted good....even the barium stuff. I could watch the whole thing on a screen. No side effects etc.

You will be fine it doesn't take long. I am the the worlds worst worrier. I was ok. You will be too. I didn't have sedation.. Think I might if I had another.. It's nothing to worry about.

I was very nervous about the procedure so I opted for a sedative. Did not feel a thing. Results explained to me before I left. Don’t worry you will be in experienced hands.

Thanks strollingrose, I think I'm going to opt for sedative and go from there.

Yes I don't know where you live but last night was -17C in Aberdeen !

Macca1utd profile image
Macca1utd in reply to Luisa22

Wow that is cold! 🥶🥶🥶 It's not that bad here, it's around -4, I live near Manchester.

Luisa22 profile image
Luisa22 in reply to Macca1utd

Ha! I thought you might live near Manchester because of your username. My brother supports Man. United! (So sad that England lost against France the other day) I am not really a footie fan, but everyone around me seems to be. Even my old Auntie in her 90s is watching the footie!

-2 here tonight, south of Bristol. Not so bad here. A bit "brass monkeys" in the early mornings recently for sure!

Macca1utd profile image
Macca1utd in reply to Luisa22

Your brother is a smart man then! 👹😄 yeah it's a shame England couldn't go all the way but I didn't expect anymore from them to be honest.

It was -6 this morning so its definitely not warming up anytime soon. I suppose it gives more of a Christmas feeling when it's like this though.

Glad to help. I just had a barium swallow. It's so much better than the endoscope. Too many people have had their esophagus, throat and stomach damaged because of it. Barium Swallow achieves most of the same results without the invasive probing down your throat. My doctor advised me to get an endoscope...oh it just so happens he does it! I asked for the barium swallow and guess what? That facility doesn't have the machine, so I had to drive 50 miles one way. But guess what? I was in and out of there in a half hour and it was enjoyable to swallow the liquid and listen to the doctor telling me what he saw. In the end I was clear. Don't do the endoscope, it's an unnatural thing to have your throat swallow camera on a wire.

Macca1utd profile image
Macca1utd in reply to johnjerry

Thanks johnherry, I will be sure to ask about that, I would prefer something like that rather than the scope. It sounds more pleasant 😅

Luisa22 profile image
Luisa22 in reply to johnjerry

I have to agree johnjerry. Too many invasive procedures nowadays and nothing found as a result. If there's a gentler way, take it.
