i have had IBS for many years and managed it the best I can.over the last few months my situation is getting worse. I can not seem to control my bowels and I am now soiling myself. It is horrible and extremely embarrassing. I feel I have tried lots of different treatments but nothing seems to help. GP is useless
what do I do now?: i have had IBS for many... - IBS Network
what do I do now?
See a colo rectal surgeon, and a gastroenterologist. There is a two pronged treatment approach. The gastro will advise you what to eat/take. This may consist of fiber and some form of laxative. There are many types and combinations, so talk to the gastroenterologist. A colo rectal surgeon will test the anal area to see what the problem is. It may be a lack of muscle control. In this case, biofeedback physical therapy is recommended.
Agree with b1b1b1 always get a second opinion. Btw I do sphincter muscle exercises has given me a precious extra few minutes to get to the loo. Good luck🤞
if it's stress related you need to control your mind b4 it will ease
Have you tried Alflorex probiotic, which has been scientifically studied for IBS or the Nerva gut directed hypnotherapy app?
Sorry to hear you are having a bad time. It is so frustrating that your Gp is not helping you. You could contact your practice again and ask to see a different Gp. Are you on any new meds that could cause it?
I would recommend seeing another GP as soon as possible and request a referral for further tests, it's unacceptable that you're suffering. Bile Acid Malabsorption (BAM) has similar symptoms to IBS, along with faecal incontinence, there is a test for this and medication that can help. I've found that my IBS has got worse because of the menopause, so hormone changes might be an issue as well.
Sorry this is happening to you. It’s awful. Definitely go back to your GP, it’s not a way to live and they need to look into it or refer you to a gastroenterologist or specialist if they can’t help you. I take it you’ve tried diet changes & Imodium or equivalent. Hope you get some help asap!
Amitriptyline 10mgs is good for slowing down stomach nerves and helping with diarrhoea. I also take one Omeprazole a day for stomach acid. If your condition is due to Bile acid malabsorption (BAM), which a lot of people have after having their gall bladder removed, Colesevelsm really helps.
