So for the last week I have been taking lactose about 15-20mls every night, apart from 1 day I ve had a bowel movement type 4 in the mornings then this evening after my tea I had the worst stomach pain, never experienced anything g like it) so bad can’t describe, nearly rang an ambulance) then I had a type 4 bowel movement followed by the largest type 6 then type 7 was on the loo pooing for like 25mins it felt like it was never going to end. The pain was making me sick, I don’t feel right now and I feel very shaky.
This has never happened to me before, I don’t think a daily dose of lactose could cause this much damage.
I have managed to get off the loo, still got stomach cramps and feel very sick and not my self .
Does this sound normal to anyone else ??
It’s scared me as it’s not normal I ve never seen so much poo

I wasn't sure if you meant lactulose? which is a laxative/stool softener? Or do you mean lactose (milk sugar), or lactase (enzyme to help digest milk prducts)?
If it's lactulose and you were taking it for constipation to keep a regular bowel movement, maybe you had a lot of back-up going on. You feel terrible now, but it's probably best to have that all cleaned out.
If that isn't it, then a similar thing happened to me a couple of times last year. I'd had good bm's for a little while, then suddenly one evening my gut got very uncomfortable, and I had to go go go all night long until 4 in the morning, then a repeat the following day. Nine times in 24 hours. I honestly didn't know where it was all coming from as I hadn't even been constipated or taken any laxative. My body just rebelled or something. It made me feel horrible too, very shaky, cold, trembling, with an anxiety feeling and a bit sick too.
I ment lactulose think when I wrote it I was feeling quite unwell.
I was taking daily because had to start my iron tablets again for some other condition I have and knew that iron can cause constipation and I suffer with constipation didn’t want to make it worse.
However no more of that for me I will stick with laxido.
I really can’t believe I had that much poo inside, like you said I don’t know where it all came from.
I thought you might have meant lactulose. Perhaps suddenly it had a strong effect and shifted a lot of "backlog"? If you get constipation that can happen, even though you'd been going every day before when on lactulose. I hope you're feeling a bit better today?
Lactulose is not recommended for certain types of IBS , but it is in certain cases especially if you have IBS with Constipation that is caused by other health problems which are improved by lactulose use.
You should check with your GP whether lactulose is right for your conditions or not. I can use it and have to , people with certain types of liver or digestive illnesses which cause their IBS need it too , to help clear toxins not just for constipation but you have to be very careful about the dose.
If you aren't already constipated, but want to prevent constipation if you are taking iron, or other medications that have stopped your bowel movements before , you would only want a Maintenance dose 5-10 ml depending on your weight. But you should try diet changes first , I've put some of my tips below.
If you are still having a daily bowel movement you shouldn't need it or anything as strong as Laxido , or need to increase the dose above 10 ml .
(Fibrogel sachets are usually better and safer to the stomach when you are just trying to keep the bowel moving rather than laxatives of any sort , which should only be used when your bowel movements have stopped.
You don't take more than 10 ml of lactulose solution daily unless you have been constipated ( no bowel movement at all for more than three days ) and you should stop taking it as soon as you have your first bowel movement , no matter how small it is , because that shows it has done its job and the bowel will be moving smoothly higher up.
If you do keep taking any laxative when you are already going to the toliet , the problem diarrhea you had will occur and it can be quite dangerous.
Doses of over 15 ml , or 20 ml or more, are only ever recommended for use for certain medical problems to do with the liver and intestine , or under strict medical guidance for constipation issues that have lasted five days , painful diarrhea will happen if you take this amount especially for more than three days.
Its actually better to keep away from any laxative until you don't have bowel movements even if you usually get constipated taking iron. Ferrous iron causes constipation for lots of people , I don't understand why they don't give the gentle alternative on prescription.
Solgar Gentle Iron , or Iron Bisglycanate, bought at the chemist or online , is known not to cause constipation or stomach ache. I use it myself. The Dutch only prescribe it. It also stays longer in your system so people who use active iron like this have less episodes of Anaemia.
You should take Iron after food , preferably before 4 pm with vitamin C or orange juice if you can stomach it for better absorption and to reduce constipation.
Avoid red meat and processed food with saturated fat while on iron as these foods cause constipation. Many people with constipation need more soluble fibre food in their diet , but need to avoid insoluble fibre because it can make IBS with constipation worse. Probiotics and Probiotic live yoghurt reduces stomach acid and can keep the bowel working well if eaten daily reducing constipation and diarrhea. Increased B vitamins from food improve your iron levels.
Drinking the recommended water and fluids each day help reduce constipation in general, it's vital and us the best preventative for many stomach symptoms.
Rubbing your stomach in anticlockwise circles gently with the base of the palm of your hand , for a few minutes through the day after meals helps to keep the bowel moving smoothly.
Light exercise like a stroll after meals , even for just five minutes can keep the constipation from happening..
If you do need laxatives, only take a small amount. Or a small dried fig ( you can eat it chopped in yoghurt or small glass of orange , apple or cranberry juice , some liquorice or a small portion of corn can do the same job as long as you can eat them.
Yes I have had a couple of these attacks last one just about got there in the loos at Sainsburys ☹️. The shaky feeling I beleive is down to the Vagus nerve. Not pleasant at all. Takes me a couple of hours to recover then I normally feel empty and hungry.
